Porsche's diagram from the Patent for the 928's transaxle/torque tube arrangement:
Funny how they changed that on the 924 to move the clutch to the front. Possibly by request from VW or based on something they learned from the 928's development?
There was discussion on another site that even though Porsche patented the front engine, rear transaxle arrangement for the 928 that Alfa Romeo could have likely sued them due to prior art with the Alfa 116/119 as it also had the clutch and transaxle in the rear. Which may cover the reason the 924/944 had their clutch moved up front to avoid issues around Alfa, etc.
More research will be needed (unless anyone already knows the answers and can provide a link to a document/book that discusses it) as this is all hearsay and internet guessing. _________________ Stefan

I think the clutch at the back would make for quicker easier shifting and much longer synchro life.. But what do I know.. _________________ 80 Turbo - Slightly Modified |

Agreed, took about a minute to get from left to right !
Seriously though this is something that I have had some discussion about quite awhile ago and if I can find the info I will post it. The Alfa-Porsche situation was a moderate issue as I remember but I'd hate to speculate until I an hopefully locate my info. _________________ '95 BMW 318i/5 ..."Pearl"
