Got this message from Rasta's wife:
Quote:
Hi Dan, sounds like we have a valve adjuster backing out. James is worried about worse case scenario. We're are en route to laguna seca currently driving past san jose.

Please post to board. Need to get help from someone around here or Monterey. Need tools. Need to get valve cover off and adjust before driving back to oregon.
Of course we are currently driving , meaning James is driving. Folks can have my email and cell number.
Thanks.

Anyone in the relative vicinity of San Jose / Monterey that can lend a hand, please call me: seven 3 four . six 3 four . seven 9 two three.

Just got word that Shaggy has arrived safely in Monterey. Tools still desired if anyone is in the area.

If its making a tappety noise check that oiling tube elbow.
Take the cover and main spark lead off and crank it for 20-30 seconds to see if oil reaches all lobes.

How can a valve adjuster be backing out?
its impossible...its a flat on one side screw and its being held like that by the valve spring...there is no way it is unscrewing itself.

LOLZ, now that's funny!

Update: we were able to put one of our local board members in touch with the Shag-meisters and will be bringing tools to them today.

Morgan...not impossible. One of the members here had one back out and destroy the lifter bore in the head (i wanna say an aussie racer - I remember the pics). I agree that it seems very unlikely, but a worn out adjuster might "jump" threads without turning.

Also, we're running a brass oiler elbow.

BTW, I still have your spare adjusters in my garage. Shall I make them available to the Lloyd's on their way down south?

Didn't I just send you a set of lifters with adjusters in them a year or two ago?

Hey Rasta, sure hope you have it all sussed out & rectified by now. Not sure if you were referring to me above but this does sounds familiar though, very similar symptoms, with catastrophic results. Have a quick read through this thread:

RC wrote:

In my case it started as an intermittent lifter noise and developed into a persistent tap, tap, tap that was getting more severe. Checked the valve clearances that were all reasonable. Realize now that at this stage was probably only the crack progressively getting worse. A few hundred miles later the engine stopped abruptly when the lifter crapped itself completely and stripped all the teeth off the belt.

An expensive lesson learned. Should have pulled the cam and checked it thoroughly.

Don`t know what facilities you have available, but having BTDT previously, I would pull the cam and remove every cam bucket individually and very closely examine with a magnifying glass and good light for any sign of fatigue. Reassurance & peace of mind if nothing else.

Best of luck buddy.
