|
|
It has been a bit since I last posted. Here is the back story.
Last month while on my way home from Watkins Glen, the rad fan stopped working. The car didn't overheat or anything as I was at a nice constant speed and wasn't running the car hard. I noticed only because when I stop the car the fan is normally running. It has always been that way.
For the entire weekend the fan was running when I came off the track so this naturally concerned me a bit. When I got the car home I went through and made sure all the fuses were good, checked online to see if there was a fuse that ran the fan, couldn't find one. Checked the relays as well but they all seem fine. I pulled the relay I thought it was (I was wrong it is apparently the fog light relay which my car does not have). Made sure all the wires were connected properly.
So I am a bit stumped. I don't want to take the car on the track again until I am sure the fan is working properly. What else should I check? Anyone?
All thoughts and replies are appreciated. _________________ Cheers;

Strongly recommend following the procedure here:
http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/cool-01.htm
At first blush it sounds like a failed temp switch OR failed wiring in the circuit leading to the fan (which ironically not mentioned in that diagnostic). _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I haven't looked at the workshop manual but if your car has a wiring circuit that include Resistor(s) I would check the condition and connections at that point. Also check to be sure all of the grounds are in proper condition. _________________ '95 BMW 318i/5 ..."Pearl"

Thank you for the advice. I have not yet checked the grounds, all the connectors looks good.
I must admit with the work load at the office I am pretty whipped at the end of the day. I have also been working on the 944 to get that running. I think I am close.
When I resolve the fan issue I will post a good Yahoo!~~
You guys rock. _________________ Cheers;

Its been a while since I last posted about this. Looking at my last post it has been over a month. Life has been very busy with work life the 944 etc, so I really haven't had the time to look at the 924. Until today.
I decided I would start with a quick spark plug replacement as I was running a mismatched set after melting one at Watkins Glen this year. So out came the old and in went a new set of Bosch Supers. Car started up and ran fine. So I let it get some heat into it and then pulled out my test gauge. I unplugged the wires that go directly into the fan and checked for flow. It has a good flow. then I tried the wires that plug in from the harness and got NOTHING. there was no circuit going in. Now I need to check Clarkes Garage and the manual and see where it could be broken.

A simple check that worked for me a couple of times. Try tapping the radiator thermo-fan switch with a hammer when the fan should be ON. The switch is prone to sticking as it ages. Use extra caution on a plastic radiator if so equipped. _________________ 1981 931 (Concours)

Thanks Tigger, I will try that.
In case that is not the problem. I was going through the manual (Haynes) for the car, and see that Relay #2 is for "Fan" it does not specify which fan, interior blower fan or engine(Radiator) fan. Has anyone swapped this out and can confirm that it is for the Radiator fan?

if you join the two wires on the rad switch the fan should run. (slow when ign off)
If it does, faulty switch.
if it doesnt, power to fan or fan itself is faulty. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

Thanks Ozzie;
Looks like I need a long couple of wires. I am going to see if I can jump it from the battery and get it to work. Also going to test the other suggestion of hitting the fan motor with a hammer (probably my rubber mallet). Love that rural technology.
I will let you all know what happens. _________________ Cheers;
