I'm testing my fuel sending unit from an 82 924 N/A and according to the Haynes manual I should have approx. 85 ohms between the W and G spades in the upright position. When I do this I am getting 71.5 ohms (low level reading). The manual says that when inverted there should be 4.75 ohms but my meter reads the default "1"(high level reading). I had tested the unit for the low level lamp and it is working fine.

The reason I am doing the testing is because my low level lamp is on but my gauge reads just under 1/4 tank and I know that I don't have that much fuel in the tank plus now I know my low level lamp is working.

Is there a way to repair these or do I have to buy a new one?

Thanks in advance.

There is also this excellent write-up on our very own 924.org tech section:

After being correctly directed to the tech section on this site, I disassembled and cleaned the sending unit connections and wires with a vinegar/salt solution. I then neutralized the acidity with a baking soda/water mix. I dried all of the connections with compressed air and re-assembled. I am still having the same problem as to where the fuel gauge reads 1/4 tank when it should be reading empty. When I invert the unit the gauge does read full as it should. Any suggestions?

1. Try again.
2. Check all grounds, especially the ground crown at the rear of the car between the tail lights.

Thanks for the reply,I cleaned that set of grounds when I performed the initial test. I ended up taking the gauge cluster out of the dash and cleaning both connections on gauge and plug. Works fine now.

Thanks again
