any thoughts on why this would be a bad idea? it should be cheaper than having the whole dash done and easier. i was thinking about taking one to a shop but i don't want to look like a complete idiot so i thought i run it by you guys first to try to save face. _________________ '82 931

I have redone all the upholstery, carpet, and all the leather the only item I havent touched is my dash. It currently has a coverlay too. The problem I see is its very hard to stretch one single piece of vinyl or leather over the coverlay and get it to conture into all the curves, pull tight and then look some what original. I'ts very hard to get the material to lay flat and follow multiple curves at the same time. The only way I can see is to use a stretchable vinyl (when warmed with a heat gun) but then hard to pull tight cause the coverlay is thin and flimsey. Your new material would not be able to wrap around on the back side of the coverlay at all because it would now not sit flat to the dash and look very ill fitting. I too have had your idea but getting the new material to follow the shape and form of the dash, and to sit flat and not look "home made" is pretty hard. Short of removing the dash entirely, and replacing or fixing it , the easiest and most economical fix is to bondo the dash cracks, sand smoothe, then properly install a coverlay tightly, with no uncemented edges for the best fit possible. I also think Joe was experementing with fiberglass replacement dashes of his own making. His actually looked very good too. He is a tougher man than I am cause removing, fixing or duplicating , and re installing the dash looks like a major PITA. _________________ I have a 78 n\a currently under restoration. |

I was striping a parts car (77.5 924 )when I found a plastic
dash cover overlay in it ! Darn right I kept it . Under it was
the worst piece of Porsche (VW) crap/cardboard . Yup- rabbit crap!
The overlay is a little fragile but it looks great compared to the
cracked up dash that was under it . It fit over well enough that
I didn't even know it was a layover untill - - - -
