Does anyone know which 924 or 931 models were delivered with a LSD?
In some competition regulations, factory special bits are not allowed, but factory options are. I know the Porsche 220 option is for a 40% LSD.
But there is reference in the Haynes book to some 924 automatics being fitted with LSD as standard.
Can anyone confirm this and any other models where the LSD was fitted as standard?
Of course then the question arises as to which LSD is was, and where to find one that will fit a snailshell.

This link gives the LSD as option #220, so it would say under the hood on the options list. It also lists #221 as a "Porsche locking differential". Interesting.
You can also tell by the last number of the part # on the transmission itself, although I can't recall what it is... _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |

under the carpet in the rear by the spare tire there "should" be a option sticker which would list it, if not the origanil owners manual would list it, if you have neither then you can have the PCA get a birth certificate of you car by the serial # which states the options the car came with _________________ 3 928s, |

I doubt that the Porsche Club of America (PCA) can get that for you.
I belive you meant PCNA, Porsche Cars North America. |

A "(12)" at the end of the transaxle's serial number is supposed to indicate an LSD.
or...
Just jack up one rear wheel, parking brake released, gearbox in neutral.. If you can spin the wheel, you do not have an lsd (or you have one that's not working). If you can't spin it, you do have a lsd.

If you're simply looking to find a factory LSD to fit your existing trans, that's a little easier. The later 951 LSD will fit the 5-speed Audi-based trannies - both 931 and 924, even though the trannies are different. I have heard that the 930 LSD should fit the snailshell trannies. The only one that seems to be an issue is the early 4-speed trans.

Wow, that's awesome, how much do the 930 LSDs cost? _________________ 1979 Porsche 924 "S"

Cash. Lots of it.
Check out on rennlist, there's often some listed there. I should clarify, it's a common 930/911 LSD IIRC. But I haven't proven the fit myself, so while I say SHOULD fit, I don't guarantee it. As always, YMMV... Call a place that does the trannies for a living, like Guard Transmission or PowerhausII if you want a better degree of certainty. _________________ Vaughan Scott

The /12 identifier is only on the snailshell tranny. From what I can tell the '82 924na's had an LSD option with the code identifier being either 4Q (RoW) or 5Q (US). I think this should be stamped at the top of the transmission bellhousing. -This is on the Audi boxes. The 931's with the LSD-optioned Audi box should have a 6Q identifier.
The 930 LSD is different from the 931 LSD by the last digit of the part number. Hard to say what the change might be, or if only an update.
FYI- I don't think that PCA can get much info at all on original options based on VIN. Does anyone know for sure if PCNA can?
