HI,

Does anybody know what a good condition fuel pump sounds like, if its supposed to make any sound.
I discovered today that the whining sound from the back of my car (1983 NA) is not the rear axel like I thought. It makes this noise standing still and out of gear. The whining is loud enough to hear clearly while driving at all speeds. The sound is quite high pitched with no rattle or grinding, just whining.

Also...

Just found out why the car was starting hard. The cold start valve was unplugged from the thermo time switch. I had this looked into three weeks ago buy a garage. The garage said they spent hours looking for a fault but could find none. The answer thay gave to poor starting was that all 924 and 944 are poor at starting, requiring at least two or three goes !!!

The car now starts much better, turns over a lot faster. There still seems to be a problem though. Sometimes when starting, the car hesitates. Best way I can discribe it is :-

Chug..chug..chug..chuuuuuuuug..chug..broom, broom.

The engine hesitates for about a second.

Any ideas ?

Last thing.

I found my colour code in the boot
The code is LM6V. I can not find a reference to this code on any website or in the FAQ. It's a green colour and the year is 1983. Does anybody have the codes for that year please ?

Iain

I listed '77-'82 paint codes and colors here -
http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=5944
I don't see an "LM6V", but there is an "LA6V - Lhasa Green Metallic". That's a dark green and happens to be the color of my car.

My fuel pump's a noisey whiner - always has been. It can be heard from the drivers' seat with windows and doors closed. I've heard (read) that Pierburg pumps have non-metal rollers and are quieter. The OE pumps have metal rollers and as far as I know, they're all noisey.

When I hear my fuel pump I know it works. I had an intermittent fault in my ignition, which was easier to find because I could hear the pump cutting in and out. Food for thought.

Believe it or not my fuel pump is noisy only when my gas cap is not tight.
-go figure.

as per the whining noise, should be fine, they are loud pumps, but pull the relay and use a voltmeter to see how many apms the pump is drawing and post back here with results, I cant remember the normal amount,

as per the starting issue, replace the wire running from the battery to the large post of the starter, and run a new ground wire (1 or 0 guage) to the block or 1 of the starter bolts, this should help if not cure it, also while you are at it replace the large wire running to the main pole of the alt and run it away from the headers, be protecting all these wires w/ heat shield or you will be replacing them about 1 time a month,

as per the garage not being able to find the problem and it being a unplugged connector, I would notbe going back to that garage they dont know jack, when the vehicle has a hard time starting when cold then you check the accumulators for leaks and then ove on to verify that the thermo time switch is getting power and that the cold start valve/injector is working properly. also if they saif 924/944 always have a hard time starting they are morons, your vehicle has a completely different engine in it too, yours has a 2.0L audi engine and the 944 is a porsche engine w/ EFI if it has problem starting in the cold then a sensor is gone on the engine,
