|
|
Here's a question, hope someone can help:
Engine runs fine (smooth, good power and economy). No sign of oil from the exhaust.
What I do notice is that the oil light comes on once in a while (roughly every 2,000 miles). I put 0.5 litre in recently and it's fine again.
I assumed I had a very small leak from some part of the system so I wasn't too worried as long as I kept an oil can in the car to top it up.
Then I noticed something:
I did a short journey and when I arrived, I hit the brakes slightly hard as I was getting close to the kerb. I heard a clunking, sloshing noise from my side of the car (UK car) at the front. When I got out, I saw a small, fresh patch of oil just ahead of the tyre. (Oil leak was wet/fresh so I assume it was from my car).
Can it be possible the system loses oil every time the car gets thrown forward (e.g. when you brake hard to stop)? What could it be and how can I prevent it?

Well, a clunking, sloshing sound followed by the appearance of a puddle of oil in front of a tyre could be explained by an opened can of oil being stored up front in the engine compartment. That's the explanation that fits best logically, but you should know whether or not that happened.
Other than that.. I can't imagine an oil leak from the engine that can dump a puddles-worth on hard braking. The sloshing sound could also be water trapped in a door or frame rail. One guy a few months back found water sloshing in the upper frame rail that runs alongside the battery. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."
