Here's one that'll no doubt raise some debate... but I hope we can find an answer;

I have recently seen a tired-looking, but straight, Guards Red 924 with an actual metal "Porsche" and "924" badge on the back and the badges look original -OK, could be chromed plastic, I dunno. Now, every other one I've ever seen has had a sticker. For this reason, and its condition (mainly the tired paintwork and fact that it's got some rust -I was under the impression that only the first year or two weren't rust-proofed) I suspected it might be an earlier model, say a '77. Apparently, the 924 was first available here in '77, so I don't think there's any Australian-delivered '76 models here, unless they're 'grey' imports.

I realise that the rust-proofed-or-not thing could be misleading, because if the car's been repainted/repaired, that could lead to the possibility of rust. But it just looks quite straight and original to me, y'know?

BUT... this car has an automatic trans. and the first reference I can find to the automatic being available in Australia (via Redbook ) is in the '80 model-year.

So, my question(s) to you all is: Does anyone know when they stopped/started using the metal "Porsche" and "924" badges. Would this badge (and the auto trans.) be an indication of the cars age? Like, did some earlier model years definitely NOT have an auto trans. option? Did some certain spec. cars just get a metal badge, regardless of year?

Also, the car has a sunroof, if makes any difference...

FYI, I'm interested in buying the car I hope to get in touch with the owner shortly.

Hey Khal, my '78 has the same raised badges you are describing, the chrome has worn off mine over the years - they're just plastic. I've just arrived at work, otherwise I'd pop out and take a couple of pics of them.

Cool, and yours is a '78. That's a start...

I'm just about to leave work

According to PET, the emblems were used through 1978. Beginning with the 1979 model year, decals were used instead. Automatics were available as the M279 option beginning with MY 1977.

The emblems are alloy not palstic and they were used through '78.

I'll have to take a closer look at mine, was sure they were plastic... unless they've been replaced at some time in the past...

Be careful, they are extremely brittle. They also bend very easy to a point, that is how I know they are alloy. Once they bend good luck trying to get them perfectly straight again.

The word "Porsche" is brass, that's why it bends easly. The 924 is made of cast aluminum and is a little stronger. They can be taken off and repainted to look new again.

My badge on the front is metal and the Porsche on back is metal too. I don't think they are OE though because I have a "Porsche" emblem on my dash as well.

My 80 US 5 speed had gold anodized metal Porsche and 924 lettering on the back. Factory option?

I don't think the 'Porsche's on Neil's car are stock, all of the 944s that I have seen and my car had stickers on the back for the model designation and for the Porsche along the bottom

Well, I went out and had a look at mine last night, it's hard to say what they're made of without pulling them off... if they're metal of some kind then they have a black plastic coating on them, the edges are slightly rubbed off with age - which made me think they'd had a chrome coating on the surface originally...

OK, the thread's being hijacked! Bring out the S.W.A.T. team!

I'm just wondering if anyone could tell me definitively when they stopped using badges and started using stickers. I realise this may not be possible (different models being shipped to different countries at different times).

CMXXXI reckons according to PET (?), the stickers/decals were used from '79 onwards. dpw928 reckons he's got an '80 with gold-anodised metal badges? Possibly due to a low volume special (i.e. something the dealer did) or it could be (most likely in my opinion) an aftermarket thing done by one of the PO's. Then again, Redbook lists the first model year in Oz with an auto as '80, which would fit...

As I said in the first post, I can't recall ever seeing a 924 with chrome-ish, metal-looking badges, only with stickers. Which is why I thought it might be one of the first model year cars -or at least the first model year cars to arrive here in OZ.

I have located the owner and will contact him at the end of the week. All will be revealed!

But it just peaked my interest...

Following are pictures of the car I'm interested in. Click here for bigger pics...

The exterior is looking pretty sad, there's lots of cracked, chipped and faded paint. There's also some rust in the passenger door, along the bottom, and in the drivers-side front guard and along the drivers-side gutter in the roof.

But it seems completely straight, other than a small crease in the front of the drivers-side wheel arch, on the nose (looks pushed up, like it's bounced off a kerb or something)

And better yet, it seems complete. Doesn't look like anything has been pulled off it! It's still registered, ferchristssakes! Technically, you could drive it! (although the first cop you ran into -possibly literally, dunno how good those brakes are -would tell you to park it and go see the judge!)

I've talked to the owner but we haven't discussed price, other than he said that he was just looking to get back some of what he'd spent at the mechanic's (which is where it's parked)

I forgot to ask the year, DOH! But I'll talk to him again next week. Hopefully he'll have nailed down a price and negotiations can begin

It's an auto. Can anyone suggest if it's worth trying to change it to a manual? Or is it one of those more-trouble-than-it's-worth deals?

Anyways, here's some pic's... whaddaya reckon?

Should I buy it?

well if he is asking a fairly low price you should pick it up as a cheap beater :p

and on the converting to stick, if it has the clutch bracket under the dash, meaning no welding YES. but use a 944 tranny and torque tube and a mustang clutch disc
