Well, drove the car to work today, which is the 1st time it's been out for a decent run since I serviced it (new plugs, oil, oil filter, air filter, collant) & fixed the alternator. Got it home & was putting it back in the garage when the clutch just dropped all the way to the floor. Felt like something snapped as it just suddenly didn't work any more. My wife had just said that morning that she thought the clutch felt heavy (doesn't now though ).
Is this likely to be a clutch cable job or something more serious. The car is off the road again 'til I fix this. _________________ TJ

924na's from all years got the cable operated mechanical clutch. All 931, 924S, 944, etc. are hydraulic.
Something obviously broke - I'd guess the cable, but I've heard of the fork breaking too. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

Yep, most likely something to do with the cable itself (ends pulled off or the cable snapped). The fact that it was getting stiff is telling. I had a cable do the same thing. Replaced with new and the clutch was much lighter and smoother.

yeah that sounds like the cable snapped either the plastic end that hooks onto the pedal or the cable itself. you can just check quickly to see if the cable is hooked up still or if it is broken . i replaced my able cus my pedal felt very heavy and now its much smoother and lighter. cable is only like 25 bucks _________________ 78 924 sold.

I dont know what otheres think though I think its kind of an easy fix
you need a manual of some kind though Im thinking you guys have haynes manuals at your auto parts stores from there you get a good idea of whats up. The cables have nylon ends and they get brittle over time and snap off. _________________ 1979 porsche 924 Na

Haven't really had a good look for a cable yet, but the only one I've seen online (performance9.com.au) is $77 (wish it was $25). I'll go have a look at the local auto stores today or tomorrow, but I'm not holding my breath they'll have anything suitable.
Actually come to think of it, I haven't even checked the car yet, so I'd better do that first before spending any $.
Lizard, don't know why the ALT is now working where I'm sure it wasn't before. I do know there is a smell of burning rubber when I rev the engine (& the voltage increases correspondingly) that isn't there at idle. I'm thinking maybe the ALT belt is slipping, though I haven't heard any squeel. Might be a good idea to replace the ALT & A/C belts (don't want to tackle the timing belt just yet)? _________________ TJ

Had a good look tonight & found the clutch cable. It comes through the firewall at the top of the engine on the drivers side (right-hand drive), goes over the cam cover & down to the clutch (through the bracket) on the passenger side next to the brake booster.
Anyhoo, looks like the bottom nut had worked loose until it fell off the cable housing, then the cable worked it's way out of the bracket & there is a rubber washer that came off that has almost completely fallen to bits.
I've managed to get the bottom nut back on the housing, but how the hell did you guys manage to get your arms in there enough to do the adjustment? I can't get my arms in far enough to touch the clutch lever let alone get under it to lift it, then have a spare hand to adjust the top nut!
Also can't see quite how to unhook the clutch cable from the clutch lever. The haynes doesn't indicate that lifting the car is necessary & it looks even more impossible to get to from the bottom anyway.
Does a new clutch cable (think I can get it for about $45 + postage from Brissie about 130km away rather than Sydney about 1000km away) include the cable housing, nuts & rubber washers? _________________ TJ

Finally got the clutch cable back on the bracket. Per my previous post, not broken at all, the bottom nut came undone & the cable just slipped out of the bracket.
Was an absolute PITA as there wasn't enough room for me to get my arm or arms in there to effectively manipulate the bottom nut back on. Ended up putting the car back on the ramps & doing it from underneath. I found that easier & the extra pair of hands I had from above also helped immensly (thanks Chick). _________________ TJ
