i looked in a Hayns mag but it does not have a good diagram.

Socket wrench on crankshaft pulley nut. If you can get a socket on the crankshaft pulley, you can turn it (clockwise) with a socket wrench.
Once you have the crankshaft sitting at TDC for cylinder #1, you need to install the distributor body so the rotor points to the ignition wire for spark plug #1. You’ll notice a small notch on the distributor that aligns to the ignition point for spark plug #1. Put the rotor on the distributor shaft and turn the shaft so the rotor points to (just before) the notch on the distributor body.
You will probably have to try it a few times until you get the gears to match up properly.Distributor rotor aligned with No. 1 cylinder TDC mark (arrow) on distributor housing.
Thanks to Paul for the great pictures from the past

I knew that positive thinking thing wouldn't work. |

When seated, mine looked like this. Note the mark on the flange in relation to the stud used to tighten down the housing. The factory manual says that the clips on the housing should be in-line with (parallel to) the crankshaft, but mine have never aligned that way. Could be that at one point it was reassembled incorrectly, and it was so far "off" the plug wires were moved.

I had to rotate the distributor CCW a little bit when I first fired it up after the rebuild, but aligning the mark like it is shown at least got me in the ball park. _________________ '79 Eurospec 931 |

Trace the rotor's rotation. Firing order is 1-3-4-2, but I can't remember which way things rotate. Leave the distributor cap off and bump your starter, you will see which way it rotates, then hook them up one at a time in the right sequence. _________________ '79 Eurospec 931 |

4 is directly across from 1 so those two are easy. Besides wire 4 probably won't reach plug 1!
Hook 2 and 3 up and start it, if it sounds like its running on 2 cylinders, shut it down and reverse 2 and 3. |
