Hi, first of all I would like to say hi as I am new to the forums, I recently bought a 1980 924 turbo and the car seems to be in perfect condition except it slightly grinds when going from 1st to second gear or downshifting from 3rd to second but the main problem is if I am not practically at a complete stop down shifting from 2 to first makes a god-awful grinding noise and will barley go into gear also there seems to be somewhat strong exausht fumes when I start the car but after driving it seems to be fine oh yes a and also when I turn on the air conditoner it makes a loud noise liek a fan or belt scratching, works just fien but makes a horrible noise but anyways any help is appreciated thanx.

Welcome to the board!

Your car has the Porsche snailshell transmission and the problems you are having are common. There is no cheap fix. Use care when shifting into second and never shift into first while the car is moving. I recently had mine rebult for the same reasons for about $1500.

The fan belt noise is mostly likely a loose or worn A/C belt.

Check your rear hatch seal, if it has a gap above the keyhole, that will allow exhaust to enter the car.

Your first gear is gone already, so it probably won't get any worse if you never shift into first while moving.

Second gear may be able to be fixed with less than $100 in parts if all it needs is a new syncronizer ring. If you continue to "crunch" it you will need a new second gear set.

Use the search feature to locate threads that contains the word "snailshell".
