Some have asked for part numbers/details of my installation.
Here's the part numbers (from Racer's Parts Wholesale) I used:
PER-1791 - remote filter mount, single, ports lt and rt - $26.95, could use PER-1211 for $15.99 but would require 90 deg hose ends
PER-111 - Spin-on adapter - this is the critical part to interface to the 924 block, 3/4-16 thread, $13.49
Both of the above have 1/2"NPT threads, and will reqiure adapters to use -10AN hose - FCM-2009, $5.29 each - and the filter mount will need to be located somewhere, small fabrication job.
I used -10 AN hose throughout my install; about $6/foot, plus $5-25 per reuseable hose end.
I also chose to add:
PER-1070 - oil thermostat (48.95, plus 4 more adapters and 4 more hose ends, a lot of extra money)
I used the VDO V31-0012 300deg F oil temp gauge with the corresponding sender V32-3423, 300F/120C, M10x1 thread (threaded into the top of the oil filter mount in the boss provided). I don't believe RPW still carries VDO gauges, though.
I also am now using the TruCool 24-row TRU-L7B oil cooler ($44.95). Started with the 12-row, but decided to upgrade. That of course also needs 1/2NPT adapters (total of 6 for the installation, unless you include the oil thermostat). _________________ Vaughan Scott

Yeah, pictures would be great so I have a better idea what to do if I was going to try to do this myself.
Also, all said and done, how much did the entire setup cost you? _________________ 1978 924 |

Vaughn, is this mod "for racers only", or would it also benefit us lowly NA street drivers too? Pardon my ignorance...I know that it should help the car run cooler, and it doesn't seem to expensive or onerous to perform, just wondering what the cost/benefit ratio would be... _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

the 924 NA does not need a oil cooler for street use, you can install it on a street car, but I would not recommend doing so without having an oil cooler thermostat, or you will actually rob yourself power. _________________ 3 928s, |

oil cooler is a great add-on unless its like your first add-on from stock
or at the least move the darn oil filter so its easier to get to. Thanks

Thanks! Just got back from the Bahamas - visiting my brother in Nassau.
Not many 924's around. Actually didn't see one Porsche all week.
Yeah, an oil cooler is not totally necessary for a NA street car. But, as noted, it can have its advantages. I would not recommend doing it unless you go with full braided lines throughout (Aeroquip or equivalent, which adds another $200-300 to the cost). Lower oil temps and easier filter access are nice though not 100% necessary. I don't think I'd bother, if I had an NA for the street. For the turbo, sure, but it comes with, of course. _________________ Vaughan Scott

Hello,
I installed one to my 924 NA, the cooler itself was 931 standard one, oil filter adaptor was from '90 Opel Senator 3.0L straight 6, oil lines & hoses too. In this setup you'd have to use different length oil filter, '94 VW Golf etc fits fine & all the valves and stuff inside the filter are the same, all checked out. Only one modification to the radiator needed: adaptors from the oil lines -> radiator, cost me ~25$ to make _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp

Did it come with a thermostat...Id probly try and run wothout the thermostat cant say why.. period. Though hey Lizard ( I like to call him Lizzie -baby) cant say why though why will the oil cooler rob power
from a street car is this really true I dout it. When I add one Ill just use
tubing and clamps and also Ill use a piece of pipe with a hook up
added for a manual oil pressure guage ... ahhh excited about the
possibilities the new yr brings in all things important..HOBBY, spirit
& job. _________________ 1979 porsche 924 Na

the oil cooler will rob power on a street car if a cooler isnt installed as the oil will not reach opt viscosity rate. _________________ 3 928s, |

I think what he's trying to say is that until the oil's warmed up, frictional losses will indeed be higher than normal due to higher than normal oil viscosity during the warm-up phase, and without a t-stat for the oil plumbing, the warm-up phase will be longer than with.
Of course, using synthetic will mitigate some of this. _________________ Vaughan Scott
