I know it's a vague question, but can anyone tell me a few things that could be going wrong if:
upon startup, the car always dies if its not given some gas for at least a minute or two
sometimes it doesnt want to go when i'm starting up in first
I think the latter may be because I'm starting the car in third gear. It's only happened a couple of times, and I'm not used to manuals or this car's crazy gearbox where 1st gear is in the top middle position instead of top left.

If everything else is right (valve timing, ignition timing, good fuel, good compression, correct air:fuel mixture and idle setting, fuel pressure, etc.), then my first choice would be a problem with your AAV (auxiliary air valve) - it's supposed to be opened when cold to raise the idle speed, providing more air and fuel during warm-up. Second choice would be the warm-up regulator (WUR) that provides more fuel, enriching the air:fuel mix during warm-up. The AAV can be checked by removing, placing it in a freezer to see that the valve opens and removing it to warm air and applying 12 volts to see that it closes when heated. The WUR is tested on the car with a CIS tester. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

It's OK, I think it may be just an idle that's too too low. I've been getting a lot better at the stick etc, but it's been too cold to check any of the stuff smoothie mentioned.
I found out it was probably the idle when I finally got the tach hooked back up and it was reading like <500rpm at idle. I think it should probably be closer to 750-1000, so I'm going to tweak the screw next time I'm out messing with the car. I also realized that I've been driving it at like less than 2500 rpm all the time because it's so loud and I wasn't sure what it sounded like at higher revs. Now that I know what the engine's doing, I can drive a little happier. _________________ 1977 Porsche 924 red and READY! |
