I have heard that the 1997's had their share of problems, from total motor failure to small issues issues like clicking noises in the instrument panel to stickey door locks, seat cushion covers that become uneven, cracking oil filler hoses, vibrating rear window, scratchy sounding clutch pedals. Does anyone have experience with a 97-99 Boxster? Also on eBay a few are showing for $23-24,000 Canadian, does that seem low? I thought/ read retail was $35-40,000ish.

Boxsters are more reliable than most people believe.
The prices of Boxsters are very low right now with a new model coming out this year (the 987) and the fact that convertables never sell well in the winter.
Ask a local dealer to check the maintenance history from Porsche's database.
I keep waiting for a high mileage one to get below $10K so I can jam a 996 3.4 liter into it. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

I knew you would post a reply first and it would be short and sweet. Thanks.
As for the '98, was that a fair year for them? What would you expect to pay for a '98 if you wanted one now? |

A 98 with about 75,000 miles should be available for about $12,000 to $14,000 US.
Late 98s may have sleeved cylinders, but most of them failed within 25,000 miles so higher mileage cars either didn't have them or the motor has already been replaced.
Boxsters are SWEET cars, don't drive one until you are ready to buy one! _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

12-14 US? Geeze that seems low. $14,500-16,500 for a 98 with 120,000 kms {75,000 miles}. Do guys really drive the cars 20,000 kms {12,500miles} every year? Also would the maintenance be around 3k per year? And if they are that low in price, would you drive the car in winte with salt on the road for 4 months?
Just picking your brain. |

Trade in value is about $12,500, which is were I always start negotiating.
I drive mine in Wi winters using a hardtop and 16" wheels with Pilot Alpins. I also installed clip on mudflaps (Tweeks) to help save the paint behind the tires.
In cold weather the shifting is stiff until the car warms up. Funny, the wife's TT shifts fine when cold.
My car is 42 months old and has 41,300 miles. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Maintenance is every 15,000 miles. 15K runs about $350, 30k about $900. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

You keep it out in the snow!? {Nice plate} Do you have much road salt there? We use tonnes and tonnes, I would worry about rust. As for the 15k and 30k service, that seems wicked low, what would it include? I'm going to start looking right now for one, I want to toss my grand am off a cliff and now I have 3 cars so.... I'll keep the 24 {just in such good shape and I'll never find a buyer here} and ditch the un-Grand-am and the Toyota {winter beater}.
Other than the Boxster being twice the purchase price of my 924, the costs are the same, just the Boxster will start every time.
Is there anything I should look out for? It seems like moving up to an S will cost me a few grand more while only getting a couple of hp and about the same in torque.
Thanks again Paul! |

We have lots of salt, why do you think I drive white Porsches!
IIRC (too lazy to look), the warranty for rust is 10 years.
I have never seen any rust on a post 1995 Porsche so don't worry.
The 15k is mostly an oil and filter change and is a ripoff!
The 30k includes $200 to change the brake fluid, another ripoff!
You will replace tires a lot more often, rears last 15,000 to 20,000 miles. fronts about 25,000 miles.
The plate is a photochop, I was bored and it seemed appropriate. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Ahh, I forgot about the warranties. Also we don't have many Porsches here, so your help is well taken. {I could see the blur around your plate } So if I start looking around the east coast for a '98 with 75,000MI in good overall condition with a recent service, I should find some near $15,000US { then hagle/ him&haw of course}? That seems to good to be true. I almost wish I knew this three years ago. I could have already wrapped two around a tree.
I'll search your links and see if I can find any common issues.
Thanks once more Paul. I'll keep you informed. I am soo glad that the Elise wasn't allowed in Canada now.... |
