|
|
hello! greetings from the UK.
before asking this question, i'd like to add that i have searched this site for an answer, and although found topics relating to heater issues, was not able to find a specific answer to the problem i have....so i apologise in advance if this is a common known fault!
i have an '84 924 2.0 - had it for 2 years - best car i've ever had! will aim to post a picture or 2 soon.
the problem: despite moving the heater control lever to the relevant warm/hot air setting, i am getting no warm air in - just cold. just to clarify, the heater fan works fine on all 3 of the various intensity settings (more cold!),
the lever/slider to change from cold to warm air appears to be 'attached', and feels the same as before the problem occured (what i mean is that it doesn't seem that anything has 'broken' from the sliders end as such, and it has the same level of resistance when sliding left to right).
hope that's a clear explanantion.
any ideas? i was thinking perhaps gloves, scarf, hat and snow shoes may do the trick, but not altogether certain that is what porsche intended? _________________ 1984-924-2.0 |

Under the bonnet look for a hot water valve that is attached to the heater hose and is opened and closed via a cable that goes to the heater controls. With an assistant, move the lever from hot to cold and look to see if the valve opens and closes. This valve shuts off or allows hot coolant to enter the heater core inside the car.
I`m not familiar with locations on a rhd car but look for heater hoses by the firewall and you should easily see the valve. |

if the heater valve moves, it is possibly defective, or your heater core is bad/blocked. _________________ 3 928s, |

Guys, thanks for the pointers.
You were right. The problem was due to the wire having broken away from the heater hose, and so when i got someone to move the heater controls from inside the car, where the cable terminates inside the engine bay was not attached to the lever and thus unable to open the valve. I have now manually positioned the lever to a 3 o'clock position, and now get nice warm air inside the cabin. Fantastic!
Next problem, to fix is the damn misfiring and not firing on all cylinders problem. Thankfully the same problem appears to have been encountered by someone previously on this forum, and so the first things to check appear to be plugs (if i can get the damn things out!) and distributer / rotor.[/img] |

Pull one wire at a time (I always shut the motor off, pull a wire, then restart) and identify which cylinders are missing.
Check the plugs
Check the plug wires
Check the distributor cap and rotor
Check your timing
Check your valve clearances
Check your compression
Check for vacuum leaks
If all are good:
Pop the injectors out and test them as per the Haynes manual. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Paul, thanks for the advice. I can rule out the dist cap and rotor as both have now been replaced, but problem still remains.
The spark plugs are gonna be a real b*tch to get out as the middle 2 are inaccesible with the spark plug tool i currently have. Man - nothing is ever easy! |

All you need is a 3/8" drive 13/16 spark plug socket and a 3/8" rachet.
Make sure the motor is cold. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Thanks for the advice on the tools Paul. Went and got those bits, and boy - that was perfect - much easier to do the job with the right tools.
Replaced all plugs with Bosch Super 4's. (noticed one was loose which was likely cause of the problem.
Guess what - she purs like a pussy cat! I've got my baby back!
Thanks very much.
Happy new year.

Hi Mark, I had the heater problem on mine when i first got it. the arm on the heater valve was sticking.
what's strange is that i get warm air from the windscreen vents & the vents under the dash, but the front/driver vents will only blow out cold air?

Another common problem I have seen is the water tube that goes along the side of the block to the heater core gets blocked with rust and corrosion. _________________ Life is to short to be looking for something? |
