Drove the toofah to work this morning (first time in a while) & all was going sweet when the battery light suddenly came on & the temp suddenly shot up well into the red. Slowed to 60kph & the temp dropped below the red but the battery light stayed on. Drive slowly the rest of the way to work & put her in the car park. 1/2 hour later (had a meeting I needed to get to urgently) I confirmed the temp was back down to < 1/2 (as you would expect).

Haven't looked under the hood yet so don't know if something broke or what. Would breaking an alternator belt cause these symptoms? Can someone confirm the water pump uses the same belt as the alternator?

Won't get a chance to pop the hood until after work.

TIA...

Could it be wiring? The fan could have stopped working causing the temp spike. Did these two things happen at the very same time? Ground wires perhaps?

Happened at the same time, or VERY close to. Noticed the battery light & checked the temp, which was still OK. A minute or so later the temp was in the red.

Does the alternator belt also drive the water pump?

No, I checked and the Alt belt doesn't operate the water pump.

Actually the thread here indicates that the alternator does share a belt with the water pump.

The alternator/waterpump belt question was a pretty dumb one since I've asked the same thing before & had it answered here. In that post Smoothie said

...there's a 10mm belt in the other groove that wraps around the water pump and alternator pullies.

DOH!!!!

tj
the chanses are you have either thrown the belt off, or the alt has come loose ( check brackets for cracks) as the alt acts as the tensioner for both

Yep the alt and water pump definitly share a belt. The water will also still flow around by convection but alot more slowly.

Thats what I'm expecting too given the symptoms of battery light (alternator stopped) & overheating (water pump stopped).

I'll check it out this arvo anyway

Just checked the car & the alternator belt is missing (brand new one put on by the local car club guy only a week or so ago as the old one was worn & stretched to the point it could no longer be adjusted).

More concerning is that there is no fluid left in the coolant tank & it was full last weekend when I checked it. First time it's gone through any coolant since I drained & replaced it.

Any suggestions?

All fixed! The car club guy whacked on another belt, added some distilled water, bled the coolant system (ie ran it until the bleeder nozzle started bubbling coolant) & she's sweet.

Changed the oil in November & both this guy & the last commented specifically on how clean the oil is. Haven't done many km's since the oil change, but I gather very clean oil must be a good sign.

Glad its all fixed, musta been scary to watch that temp needle sore(sp) into the red. I wonder where all the coolant went.... and the belt...

Maybe the car club dude didnt put enough tension on the belt when fastening down the alternator and the belt jumped off. Could the belt actually come off without breaking? On my car there is a bracket on the oil cooler lines and the radiator expansion tank line that is bolted to the engine block. The belt goes around this bolt so even if the belt jumped off, it would still be stuck in the engine bay.

Scared the crap out of me!

RACQ guy said it would have boiled over (water pump not running) & spurted out the overflow tank.

That was my initial though too, but I'd re-tensioned the belt last weekend as it was squeeling again, as is expected with a new belt as it stretches.

I can't see anything on my NA that would prevent it from coming off totally. I also made the dumb-ass mistake of driving at 100+kph for about 5 minutes or so with a very wobbly wheel on the back (expecting new ones from My924GTC any time now, was cheaper to import 'em than to buy 'em in Aus). The car shook like crazy which is what I think probably threw the belt.
