I went to AZ today to get something to seal my oil plug so it won't leak when I replace it. The guy gave me one of those rubber O-rings. It fits around the threads nice and tight. When tightened up, will this keep the plug from leaking?
Also, I have a slow dripping oil leak, and I'm not sure where it's coming from. I think it may be the oil pan gasket. Do you need to pull the engine to replace the gasket? _________________ 1977 Porsche 924 red and READY! |

Don't use an O-ring. There is a proper copper (hey, that rhymes) gasket that goes on the drain plug. Yes, the oil pan gasket can be replaced with the engine in-chassis. Just make sure to use a torque wrench and you should be O.K. Just remember to tighten the pan to the block before tightening the bellhousing to the pan. _________________ Dan Flanagan--2002 VW Jetta TDI, 83 Mercedes 300D,83 Mercedes Euro-240D |

The original oil drain seal is a metal crush-ring, and a new one came with the oil pan gasket set I bought. The plastic one will probably be OK, I use something like that on my old Toyota truck and haven't ever had any problems.
I've only removed the pan with the engine out, but from others who have posted on the Board, yes, you can drop the pan with the engine in place. You might want to consider steam cleaning the bottom of the engine and re-torquing all (?18?) of the hex key bolts and see if that stops the leak. I suspect that pulling the pan isn't as easy as it sounds. May not be the pan gasket after all. _________________ '79 Eurospec 931 |

wow... there are 18 of them?! I guess I'll get the right size hex and torque them all to specs and see how it works. I decided to use the O-Ring for a little while to see what happens. If it leaks, no big deal I'll buy the crush ring and change the oil again. I can't imagine it leaking that much more than it is right now, though. _________________ 1977 Porsche 924 red and READY! |
