So, I booked my car in to get the timing belt changed today. They're also going to check the tappets (or something along those lines?) and change the gearbox oil.

Oh yeah, and they're gonna fix that coolant leak for me. And bleed the brakes/replace fluid.

AU$785

But they can't do it for another two weeks. I think the price is OK. I'm surprised it wasn't more.

But I'm getting them to check out the gearshift at the same time, replace the bushes or whatever is necessary. He wouldn't quote to do that 'cause he's gotta check whether he has to drop the gearbox first. Still, it should only be an extra AU$120 (couple of hous labour) or so extra. The parts are pretty cheap, I think.

And they're also gonna get the air-con checked out. See what needs to be done.

She'll be purring like a kitten soon

Hey Khal,

Save yourself some $ & do the gearbox oil & brake fluid yourself. So easy even I was able to do those

AUS 785$?

Khal, this list of to-do's take maximum of 3-4 hours to perform yourself...
You could buy something useful for that cash: new tires, exaust system etc.
Sry, but IMO it's a waste of money to let technician perform the maintenance
Besides, I don't trust them
Only thing I let someone else to do is machining jobs to the engine.

But hey, that's just me, I like to get out of the office and get under the car twice a month

Khal do the fluid changes yourself, use the money saved and buy tickets to the Aussie open mate.

Come on guys if there is one thing you get from Khal's 1600 or so posts is that he is not exactly a 'hands on' kinda guy, and I would not encourage him to get out of the frying pan and into the fire.

But Raceboy's right, that is about 4 hours worth of work, maybe a little more if you are uncomfortable working on things.

Khal do you even own a set of tools that would suffice for this work? If not that is where your $ would be spent along with the necessary parts.

I say think about getting your hands dirty over the next couple weeks and think of how much better your technical advice would be if you were actually your own technician.

Khal I know you are a "let the big boys handle it" kinda guy but heres an alternative... Bring the car round to Dave's and i'll come round and we will do all the work for free. Me and dave have done all these jobs to our cars before, plus we can drink beer while doing it.

I can change the brake fluid and gearbox oil in 30 minutes, Dave knows everything about the coolant system, both of us have done the timing belt and front of engine service (Dave many times). I fixed my gearshift from sloppy to sharp a month ago.

Fully understand if you want to leave your car to the pros but the offer is there. Sorry for speaking for Dave but im sure he would be keen.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, My924gtc!
But you're right. I've changed the oil and the plugs and filters, etc... I've even bled a set of brakes before! But I've never done a timing belt (on any car) and wouldn't really back myself to do it first go. Especially not with a Turbo... I'd be crushed like a set of valves if I turned that key and *bang crunch crunch* instead of *broom broom*

Yet again, spot on.
No, I do not own the tools to do this. Furthermore, I live in a town-house with a garage so huge ( ) that I can't even open my doors all the way...

I'd love nothing more, believe me. But time and circumstance dont allow *sigh*

Well, as above. I've never done it, nor do I have the facilities to do it even if I wanted to.
BTW, my car is pretty tidy. It's got new tyres... and a nice stainless steel exhaust

Yeah, I used to be the same. But this car has been serviced at this place its whole life. They know the car. They know me. I've never had any trouble with them whatsoever. In fact, quite the opposite... they've always been very informative and helpful. They've even fixed stuff for me for free!
And I get to perve on all the cool race cars and specials they have stashed over there...

Cheers fellas, I knew you'd be keen

But it's OK. I honestly don't mind paying to have the work done. In fact, I prefer it. Per last post, they know the car and they know me and I've never had any trouble with them. Besides, at least if anything goes wrong it's on their heads...

EDIT:

Found it! Just one of the reasons why I'd like the professionals to do the job...
I know Kenodog's pretty handy with the spanners and if he can bugger it up, I just know I would

You reckon? What's a service worth for one of these things in the U.S.?

AU$785 (minus our G.S.T. i.e. TAX ) works out at just over US$500... or GBP 300...

Any time I can fly to Brisbane for $500 or less round trip, I'll be there, especially if there's another 924 party going on....
