having just removed the rocker cover for the first time I've noticed that the 2nd lobe from the back of the engine (so number 4 cylinder, inlet or outlet?) is rather FLAT on its tip! all the rest look good so im wondering is this a common failure on 924's? Or perhaps a blocked oil feed?

Flat tip = failed cam.

You'll want to replace the cam and you'll want to look at the followers for pitting. If the top of the follower is beat up, you'll be replacing that too. You'll also want to look over the oiling tube to be sure the little black pastic elbow is ok and that the little oiling holes on the underside are clear (don't poke stuff in there, believe it or not, they are machined to fairly close tolerances...). That being said, long pipe cleaners (from a craft store) with solvent work well if you poke them in the end where the plastic elbow attaches. Parts washers are good too...

Common problem.

Expensive, pain-to-find parts, but available if you are tenacious.
