Ok I have a fun one. My 924 wont run with the engine closed. As soon as I close the hood fully the engine stumbles and dies. If the hood is open it starts right up and runs great if I set the hood down so the secondary lock grabs it it runs fine. As soon as the main latch engages it stumbles and dies.

Unfourtantly this happend at night so I couldn't see to check much and just took it easy on the way home. I need to remeber to take a flash light.

Does anyone have a clue? It was running fine with the hood closed until I tried starting it after class tonight.

You may have the distributor positioned wrong. It could be in the more upright position (when you mount the distribtor mounting bracket there are two available positions), which would allow the distributor to make heavy contact with the hood, and could cause the distributor cap to become misaligned, or the spark plug wires to make contact with the hood.

Or, your spark plus wires could be too old, cracked, and/or worn, and shorting out to the hood along the way to the spark plugs.

Could it be the battery shorting on something hanging from under the hood?

Paul was checking something for me when he was here and was amazed that I didn't have a cover on my battery terminals. Apparently the battery can short on the hood and, at worst, cause a fire...

Never had a problem with it but I covered the terminals anyway.

the only thing that comes in mind is that the plug wires tuch the hood...and maby they are cracked and leak voltage on the hood...or maby they are not deep enough in their spot and the hood makes them fail to conduct.

It could well be the battery, or the distributor or leads. I can't think of anything else the bonnet/hood could knock. If you've still got that insultation stuff under the hood, have a look to see what's banging on that, or just try to see/hear what the bonnet hits as it comes down.

can't be a direct shorting of the battery. If it was you'd notice the fireworks and the large burn marks.

Have you got down on your knees to see if anything is sticking up?

The battery would burn holes through the hood.
I have had batteries fall over in my truck!
I would suspect the dist. or leads

I had this problem at one point in the past. I had the distributor housing in the upper position so the hood cut through one of my spark plug wires and shorted things out when I closed it.

One of my hoods has holes burnt in it from a previous owners battery mishap
