Yep. And I beat the bastard, too!

I was in the left lane, behind a new Holden Commodore, an S-model or something. The RX-7 was in the right lane beside the Commodore. It was the early shape one and looked stock. But it was fark'n quick so I reckon it must've had some work done to it. It was very, very clean... unusual for such an old Mazda. Usually they're all crapped out with backwards-capped driver and an intercooler draggin' on the road
This one looked sharp.

The RX-7 and the Commodore had a bit of a go off a set of lights (we were the only three cars around) and I just sort of ran to keep up. But the guy in the Commodore backed off and I pulled out and passed him, while the RX-7 raced off to the next set of lights.

So I pull up next to the RX-7 and the lights go green and he floors it! Starts disappearing down the road... I wasn't really ready for a full-on drag race and didn't catch second properly, so he kinda left me standing -oops! But when I saw he was going for it I floored it, too, and left the Commodore behind.
To be honest, I was quite surprised at how fast my little car leapt off the line. I'd never really floored it off the lights and redlined in first before...

Anyway, that got me charged up! My toofah and the RX-7 lined up at the next set of lights and this time I was ready for it...

Lights go green and we both bog down a little. Then WHAM! The turbo kicks in and she hits readline in what feels like nothing flat! I'm about a nose in front but I've gotta find 2nd and the RX-7 obviously has a longer 1st gear... We're neck'n neck as I get into 2nd and floor it again! But the RX-7 is right beside me. He ain't losing ground!
We run through 2nd and get into 3rd at the same time but now I'm edging ahead... but just as I'm getting getting towards redline he starts backing off!
HA HA HA! Got him!

I had to turn anyway so it's lucky he backed off first!

I've never tried the stop light drag with any of my P-cars, but I use to love to try to race old men in their Porsches with my VW, most just ignored me though.

When I owned an RX-7 it was so much fun! When they're tuned properly (the early ones have carb synchronization issues) they go like snake snot - they're just so light and zippy.

But then I got waxed by a 944 and went home thinking that not only did it look better, have more power and better handling, it also came in colors I really liked...

So if an RX-7 was good then a 944 would be better.

Then my wife got her 931 with that little extra rush when the boost kicked in.

But my first sports car was the Rex. Turned me into an addict!

I know what you're sayin'

Totally different cars. But similar situation... Not too long back (a couple of weeks or so) a big old Ford Falcon pulled up next to me at the lights -an XF model, about '87.

The kid drivin' the Falc must've thought he had something good, 'cause he pulls up hard and starts gunning the engine, obviously baiting me for a run. So the lights go green and I take off kinda hard but nothing near full throttle. I barely got into boost (say, 4000rpm) before I changed into 2nd.
Funny thing is, the big old Falc hasn't gotten in front of me! Even though the kid's obviously pushing it!

So I floor it through 2nd and into 3rd and absolutely leave this old POS trailing in my dust!

We pull up at the next lights and the kid ain't gunnin' it no more! He's looking very sheepish indeed

I reckon he went home thinking "Man, I gotta get me one of them Porsche-thingies!"

Don't worry 924er. If you knew what an '87 Falcon was, you would know it doesn't fill me with pride to beat one. More like pity!

And I was impressed I could keep up with the RX-7, even start to outrun him. But keep in mind it was an old one, probably almost as old as my car. Any of the newer ones... well... I wouldn't see which way they went!

And there's plenty of blokes 'round here who've got tricked-up ricers and big V8's that would absolutely paste my car in a drag race...

Khal, I can't believe what I read that this was the first time you revved 1st to the redline? I tell you the secret: this is the only way to get maximum acceleration of of any car, because when switching to 2nd, the revs will be in proper torque range

I've never been into that kinda stuff much, but I plan to make an "educational" video of launching the car properly and give a comparasion between various ways.

Me too...especially when I read them with an Australian accent!!

There's a few ricers around here and we've raced a few of times. They're a little quicker off the line, but that doesn't really bother me 'cause I know that once we get into triple digits speed-wise they can't keep up. It's one thing to be passed at 35km/hr. It's something else entirely to blow someone's doors off at 165.

superb story khal ! must have felt great in your litle toofah.
I never got to racing an rx7...actualy they are quite rare here.

I've got a not so interesting story....

yestorday morning i was in town looking for a rust killer to put on my new 944S front fenders who got a litle bit of rust on the inside.
And i was slowly reving to 2500 RPM(where i change gears in town)
i look in the mirror an i see a superb Porsche Boxter trying to find its way near me(the road was realy tight) so he gets right behind me....superb car i tell you.....and i move aside and let him pass...man i love that car....if the road was not that tight and not full of holes i would have raced the Boxter...just to see what the toofah's'got....anyway..the sound of the toofah is great...but its nothing compared to the sound the Boxter makes !

Yes... and no.

It's the first time I've really floored it in 1st from a standing start. I usually accelerate a little more gently in 1st, even if I do get up near redline.

1st is too short in these cars.

Didn't they shorten the first coulpe of ratios in the turbo G/B to get the turbo spinning earlier.

They did, but the change from 1st to 2nd is slow , cancels out the benefit... loses valuable time in a drag race, once ito 2nd though, the change is fast into the other gears so you always catch up and then pass

Good story Khal.
