just when i learned to control the low oil pressure situations the gauge starts jumping up to very high, sometimes it even goes off the gauge numbering,
at idle it sits at 4, when driving between 6-8 and sometimes it jump erraticaly, 6-8-7-10-12+ very fast.
i just topped the engine off with 10w40 half syntethic oil up to the 'max' mark on the dip stick.
is this the, as i think, gauge that is broken, or the pressure releif valve that is to stiff?
appreciates a quick reply as he doesnt wanna hurt his dear car,

Sounds like your actual oil pressure is fine, as is the gauge, and you most likely have an intermittent short to ground on the wire between the sender and gauge. Most likely that's in the engine compartment, it's IIRC the white with blue stripe wire going to the sender at the back of the head. _________________ Vaughan Scott

ok thanks, ill check the wire.
kinda figured out that everything was OK when the car stalled at 2 bar , seems like the gauge reading is fine but has moved up a little.
side note, is it possible to change the oil filter without raising the car?
cheers _________________ Why drink and drive when you can smoke and fly?

Yes, but not ideal! I did it once, but go to my dad's ramp now...
Warm the engine up. Park your car over a curb or something with the front higher to give you a bit more room under the engine and helps the oil drain. Remove the camshaft cover cap. Place a fairly wide, low pan under the oil drain plug. Undo and allow oil to drain. Always good to change the filter too, filling it with oil before attaching it, helps stop the possibilty of your engine being oil dry for a while, and put some oil on the rubber seal and quickly put it in position and hand tighten. Install a new seal on the drain plug and tighten. Fill with your own choice of oil. _________________ 1983 - 924 (185K miles) - not mint

alrite, but dont you need to do more to the oil filter than just hand tighten it? _________________ Why drink and drive when you can smoke and fly?

Hand tighten only. Any more and you 'could' damage the top of the filter where it screws in or you could damage the seal. As long as you put some oil on the rubber mating surface it should remain oil tight.
(You may need a strap wrench to take the filter off though). _________________ 1983 - 924 (185K miles) - not mint

Yes. It'll often say right on the filter to apply a thin layer of oil to the rubber ring with your finger, screw on the filter just until the seal makes contact, then tighten 3/4 to 1 full turn from there. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."
