Many thanks to all those who have helped w/the problems encountered in reviving my '78. Last night I pulled away from the stop sign, put my foot down to shift into second, heard a pop, and my clutch stopped working. I was able to drive home in 2nd, since it was a straight shot. The clutch pedal goes up and down now, but there is no resistance, and no effect. Are there any common weak spots in the linkage, or am I looking at opening up the transaxle?

No, I haven't checked the cable, but I will do so. Can this be spliced, or should it be replaced?

Replaced.

You should also check the grounds on your car, as bad grounds make the clutch cable work as a ground, and lessens it's life.
