924s are between 20 and thirty years old. Rubber deteriorates with age. If your car still has the original spare wheel, you might want to replace it. Mine lasted five miles before falling apart. A good idea is to replace it with a full size wheel. This has many advantages. Obviously, full size tires are safer. If you drive long distances, you can finish your trip and fix the tire later. There is no need to carry a pump in the car or the special bolts or nuts to mount the steel spare wheel. If your car is lowered, you may have road clearance problems with the compact wheel. If you do use a full size steel wheel for a spare, you still need the special bolts or nuts made for these as the taper is different from alloy wheels. The problem is, while the space in the trunk is made large enough for the bigger wheel, the carpet will not fit over it. However, cars sold in the UK came with full size spares and trunk carpet made to fit (compact spares are apparently illegal in the UK). It should be possible to order the UK version of the trunk carpet or have a larger piece cut to fit. On the same topic are wheel locks. There are many wheel locks that fit the 924. However, due to the unique taper, many aftermarket locks will not seat properly and can damage the wheels. Porsche dealers and catalogs like Vertex and Pelican have the correct alloy locks. The original 928 part number has been superceded to a 993 number. These cost about $25/US and match the black color of the nuts.

Good point. I've wouldn't have a clue whether mine's the original or not! I might just replace it A.S.A.P!

I remember once someone mentioning that tyres don't last much more than five years. You should replace your tyres every five years no matter how much tread you've got or how few miles you've done..?

The Euro-Nannies are threatening to make it law that tyres have to be less than 5 years old. At the moment it's only recommended, so everyone ignores it! (Especially given the price of tyres here!)

Generally tyres wear out before 5 years are up.
However old tyres will perish and split and be a safety hazard.
I get my tyre mob to check the spare during tyre changes anyway.

The way I see it, the law requires me to get my car checked every year. Part of that check is an inspection of the condition of the tyres (not the spare though). If it fails the check, I'll replace the tyre, if it passes the check it's OK for road.

It would break my heart to throw away a serviceable tyre just because of the say-so of some wet-arse Eurocrat.
