Being an idiot, I did a valve adjustment when retorquing my head bolts, and regapped my plugs to a nice .050 to match my new MSD Blaster coil.
Car runs like ASS. Nearly impossible to start, random detonation at idle, etc. I regapped to around .040 which is not a big gap by any means, especially not for a powerful coil. Car runs like it has a serious ignition fault now, still with a random boom at idle every so often.
Any chance that I've set the valve lash too tight and this has #### something up in the head? I think I set them a little too tight at first, so I backed a few of them off. There is no tick, and I can slide the feeler gauges through easily enough, clearances are 0.004 and 0.016 for intake and exhaust respectively.
I need this car to commute, so this is a somewhat serious problem for me... _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |

Well, I've been trying to eliminate all the likely hardware problems... Swapped out the plug wires with a spare set, regapped the plugs to a rather conservative 0.030, switched out the ignition module for a spare, etc and all the problems persist.
Distributor is next, hooray. Not 100% on whether or not my spare is any good, it sat outdoors for some time, but it spins and doesn't seem to have too much play in it... Wish me luck. _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |

I've heard the blaster coil may be too hot and arc in the distrib.
Just a guess but I would try the old coil again for a test. _________________ 1978 924 95 mile daily driver.

Engine was running fine with teh blaster coil and a more conservative gap. Tried a new distributor, engine fired up and the valvetrain promptly ate itself. Good thing I have a spare head sitting on the floor next to the car.
Out with teh old, in with the new. _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |

Yeup. I guess one of the tappets was beyond adjustment. I popped a new dizzy in, it started to catch and then made a huge clatter of mechanical nasty noise. I figured "Oh, the dizzy is ####. Ok."
Swapped the other dizzy in, same noise, which got VERY bad after a cranking. Unless I just chewed up my starter or ring gear, which is also a very real possibility. Going to check that before swapping on teh new head, just to be sure. I have a spare flywheel and starter in Courtenay... _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |
