|
|
So I just arrived at school today when a classmate came in and informed me that the wind had knocked a branch down right through my back hatch !! Glass everywhere. So I made a few enquiries and found out that the local import wreckers want $650-$950 for a new hatch depending on condition !! I have an appointment with an insurance adjuster tonight and if that's the value they say then would I be better off taking the buyout and getting a lexan one from GT Racing ? Has anyone actually gone this route? I'm just wondering if bonding the frame to the plastic will be a nightmare.Any thoughts from people who've either done this or heard about it being done please let me know.Dumb tree. _________________ 1979 Euro 931, Olive

Pull the hatch off & stick a tarp over the back to waterproof it, then drive down to the US & install one of the ones from a board member that has 5 or 6 sitting around in the shed. Then drive it back _________________ TJ

As i have plastic on the race car, i may be able to help out here. DON'T!!!!
Nothing wrong with plastic, except it clouds over or goes murky if you will. Even when fitted to a frame as mmine is, the hatch probably wont seal. Mine has inch wide gaps where it bends down to meet the rear arch by the B pillar. It will mist over and it rattles like a bi%^$ch!!
Other than that, good as gold!!
Seriously, there must be a ton of guys there in the US who have a spare hatch or ten lying around.
I see your future, and it includes a trip south of the border, armed with the requisite tools and a few of them yankee $$$'s
Good Luck
Regards,
Steve

pm My924GTC. I think he might have a few that you could buy from him. Sure is a shame that happened. At least it wasnt some mean a-hole who broke it.

I've had to fit an alloy bar between the two sides to hold it in on mine. There's no strength at all in the original alloy frame - the rigidity obviously comes almost entirely from the glass!
Unless you're racing and need to save a lot of weight just stick with glass. _________________ Andrew

I re-attached the glass to the frame on mine 2 years ago. Wasn't too bad. Requires the correct glue and primer though...................very special stuff. 3M makes it. You can get the part numbers in a separate post of mine. As far as plastic, I think you're in another world there. The 3M stuff I used was specifically for attaching glass to a metal frame so I thnk you would need different stuff for plastic. Good luck. _________________ 1981 931 (Concours)

Khal funny you should say -4,that's exactly what our predicted low for the next couple of days is supposed to be.

I know of a 944 hatch for about 150. It has the big spoiler and it has some issues where the main part joins the side part but it is goo otherwise. The issue is getting it to you. eh? _________________ The Porsche is now my son's, my car is cooler, slower but cooler. |

Tis true I have a few hatches, and they are free if you come pick them up, but shipping them is out of the question.
That said, Kenodog is more than welcome to visit, he is more than welcome to pick from the stash of 924/931 hatch glass, and I'd be more than happy to help install it, but I guarantee he leaves with his tail between his legs... on a bus.
Just kidding Leigh, I'd buy you a plane ticket back to BC. |

Yeah less see the cis compensate for that colder air , i would block off the intercooler or most of it .
The Lexan is a pain in the arse and will be cloudy by next summer and requires special care everyday. _________________ 928 gts prototype

Why would he go back on a bus OR a plane???? I am sure his car is plenty fast enough to make it back home! _________________ 1976 924

Ditto. Have both. I'm even skeptical about the lexan for a race car! _________________ John

I could use a vacation and a nice drive back east would be lovely buy i've too many teeth to be seen in Michigan. Also I wear shoes, and haven't dated a first cousin in ages ! (Just kidding MI. )
So thanks anyways Mark but i'll pass.
BTW,got those dyno #'s yet ?
Sequential I run it a little rich anyways so the cooler air just brings it to the middle of stoich on the a/f.It would suck if I lived anywhere it got REALLY cold because i'd constantly be adjusting the mixture.
I contacted Mikri184 but he told me to look elsewhere.Seems alot of money to pass up to spite the face as it were.C'est la vie.Sad though, because the last 944 hatch the insurance company bought from a local wrecker they paid $995 for !!!! I just about had a coronary when I heard that,it's more than Tim wants for his whole car.
But the good news is that if they can't find a good used one I may be
getting one from Porsche, provided they still make them that is.
Who knows, gotta go see the glass shop now then to the waterjet cutters then to school and on......
