Im not worried my engine will overheat.. but im worried it cools to much,
when im standing still the engine heats up to about half the gauge, then when i start driving it moves down again into the white, especialy when going on the highway.

my car has the turbo cooling vents in the front added for style, think that causes it?

I would begin by checking the thermostat. First, make sure you have one installed and second, if you do, make sure it's the correct type and opens/closes at the proper temperatures. Sounds lke the symptoms you describe would correlate with not having a thermostat installed.

***Edit***
Correction: After reading another post by Smoothie, it appears I stand corrected. Not having a thermostat installed would actually result in hotter temps. Don't want to mislead anyone. Here's the post with Smoothies explanation::

924er, you should use antifreeze. It not only protects against freezing, but also protects against boilovers and provides lubrication for the water pump. You should at least add water pump lube & anit-rust to the system (available at any auto parts store).

Not only that it provides anti corrrosion to your aluminium head and other alloy parts.

Pure water is actually a better coolant than an antifreeze mixture.

If you want your cooling system to be less efficient, add the correct amount of a silicone and phosphate free antifreeze to your cooling system.

You know, come to think of it gohim, I recall the last time I flushed my cooling system, before adding antifreeze, that the temp gauge was reading significantly cooler. Hmmmmmmmmm.

i have that probelm too...my car never heats up at least its standing.

It has a termostat...i'm not shure it works...but it think it does...i've pushed the car realy hard on the track at high temps the last summer...it kept cool.

But in the winter the car never heats up and it eats a shit load of gas.

Some of us have installed lower temp thermostats and fan switches which are great in the summer, but don't work well in sub freezing temps.

antifreeze should be used bacause if the water freezes then you are #### and have to replace the whole system, enough said about that

why would i not have a termostat installed? The engine heat is normal when standing still (no matter of the temp outside) and drving slowly, but as soon as i speed up the temp drops. so i suspect its the wind that cools it..

really need help on this issue

yea...my car acts exactly the same as yours doomer77.

I dont mind it in the summer...but in the winter...when i drive fast it moves the idle up to 1500 RPM.

Could still be a lazy thermostat, ie., weak spring causing it to open early and/or close later. The spring gets weak with age. While driving, heat is removed from the coolant more quickly and a thermostat that closes more slowly will result in cooler temps.

You need a higher temp thermostat or you can do it the old fashioned way: tape a hunk of something water proof over the front of about half of the radiator.
