I need to take my car in for a tune up, the standard stuff, checking that all systems are go, oil/filter change, maybe timing belt plus various other parts and bits.
what should one of these things normally cost? _________________ Why drink and drive when you can smoke and fly?

A basic service for a modern car, which covers most if the things you've mentioned, would cost about £100 - £150 in this country. Say E150 - E250, but I'd like to hope garages aren't as greedy in Belgium...
BTW anything they find broken is extra... _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

just do it yourself and it'll be way cheaper, parts for tuneup inlcuding the timing belt are super cheap so you'd pay mostly for labour.
I guess tuneup would be spark plugs, rotor, cap, maybe spark plug wires, fuel filter. timing belt and vbelt are really easy to change and the engine isn't interference so it isn't a big deal if you get it wrong the first time.
you might want a shop to check your ignition timing/ fuel mixture later if you want.
timing belt is like 15 dollars. vbelt around 10 dollars, spark plugs like 5-10 dolllars, cap/ rotor _________________ 78 924 sold.

Yes, you should really try and do these things yourself; not just to save money, but you really get to know your car and get confidence in it and yourself.
As Tim says, most of these thing are quite simple and it's a great way to learn.
Plus we are always here for advice... _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

But that's how you learn for next time...!
Actually, watching some one who knows what they're doing is also a good way to learn - but they need to be patient. Could be difficult to find in a pro mechanic...
Good luck. _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

what do you plan on changing..... If you are just doing the basic tuneup or mostly anything other than messing around with the timing or fuel mixture yourself you can't really do it wrong and not know..... _________________ 78 924 sold.

Even I can change the plugs, oil, filters, etc... that's no-brainer stuff.
The timing belt is a little more tricky but certainly not impossible. At least you can't bend the valves if you get it wrong! (not like the Turbo )
However, I'm with you doomer77... if you can afford to get someone else to do it, go for it! _________________ '80 924 Turbo |
