Saw this posted on the Rennlist Off Topic site today and thought I'd cross post it. Not sure of the validity of the information but thought it was worth mentioning, especially for those who sell on ebay.

Clever way to steal your eBay ID

No doubt everybody's getting those usual fake Paypal or credit card emails, urging you to log in to a spoofed site to steal your information; I probably get 10 of those a week. I have a high radar for it, and enjoy logging into these requests with the user name "complete idiot" and so forth.

But I got one from eBay last night that was a little different; it was a "Question from an eBay Member" email that looked very legit ... it read "Hi, please tell me what happened with the item. Is it no longer available for sale? Or if it is can you give me the link to your listing? I can arrange payment via PayPal right away. Let me know. Thank you, Muller S." and came from someone with a good feedback rating.

As I happened to have some guitar equipment that was recently up for auction, my instinct was to respond "Which item were you interested in?" but to do that, you have to log into eBay to respond, and that was where your ID would be stolen. The email looked real, they spoofed login page was perfectly done. You have to check the URL to make sure you're really there; this was a numeric URL.

Word to the wise ...

Yep- got that one myself but twigged when I had to enter my account ID.

Another one I received was from 'ebay' which said something like
"log on to upgrade to a power seller.' or something along those lines.

I also have had problems with a potential E-bay scam only the other day that sounds similar. After losing out on a bid to buy a car I was glad to receive an E-mail titled "Question from E-bay Memeber..." that looked genuine offering me a Second Chance Offer on the car. I smelled a rat straight away because when I checked the bid history I was the third highest bidder and it was less than 24 hours after the auction had ended. The question had come from someone who I had no bid activity with and was not even on the list of bidders. Finally when I checked the location of the "member" he was in the US (I'm in the UK). So buyers beware!!

I guess the safest thing to do then is to never click on the convienent links in those emails and just log into your EBay account manually and check your messages.
