Any assistance or information would be sincerely appreciated. My 82 924 has no Euro markings. It has all the standard US model features (although being a late 82 is does have all the upgrades).

Anyway... my car came with two complete sets of owners and service manuals. A set in English and a set in (I think) German. The service manual contains dealer stamps where it was originally bought and serviced as follows:

AUTOHAUS HERBST u. CO KG
SCHEWIENFURTER STR 26 - TEL 3 08 15
8500 NORNBERG 141
PORSCHE - Direkthandler

Sometime later, US maintenance stamps appear.

So? Is this a German dealer? If so, why is the car in US spec?

Just curious....

One possibility, someone in the US armed forces that was stationed in Germany took delivery of a US car, drove it awhile and brought it back at Uncle Sam's expense.

OK, here's a bit of additional info..

The original owner was:

D Carley
Civ Pers Office
APO 09696

So that scenario is certainly likely. I didn't know a person could take possession of a US car overseas. That's really interesting.

That's really interesting.. thanks!

Just to finish the thought... at sometime in 84, the car was apparently shipped to Kansas City where dealer maintenance stamps continue to appear until late 87. Somehow the car then found its way to a dealer lot here in Va Beach where I found it in 88.

Paul's idea does seem likely to me, too.

Well, even with my poor German, I can decipher "AUTOHAUS" ("house of cars" or probably more correctly in English, "dealership"). I guess "HERBST" is the name of the dealership. "STR" is short for "Straße" or "Street" in English. And "NORNBERG" is obviously the town. So it'll be:

26 Schewienfurter St, Nornberg.

I don't know about the "u. CO KG" but it's probably something like "Inc." or "Pty. Ltd."

I'm guessing "TEL 3 08 15" is simply the telephone number.

And the "8500" and "141" either side of "NORNBERG" are probably post/zip codes.

Maybe the owner was stationed at Fort Riley next?

The owner had to be a US civilian employee to work in the civilian personel office. They are entitled to use the exchange service when stationed oversea and as such can get the military discount for new car sales. Up until 1984 (when I retired) the military would not pay for the shipping of non US manufactured vehicles so the auto makers often provided a voucher to pay at least part if not all of the shipping costs. My last new car purchase was a Triumph Spitfire and British Leyland provided 100 pounds toward shipping it to the US when I departed England.

I sold a 80 924 in 1989 to a Army Ranger Captain who claimed he needed a Porsche to take to Germany with him so that he could buy a new one in Germany . He claimed the army would pay the shipping both ways, but only if he brought one from the states. Porsche in, Porsche out, they didn't care if it was the same one.

He could have been FOS, but he paid what I was asking for the car!

Could have been his or the Armys interpretation of "US origin" autos. The USAF was interpreting it as US made.

Someone recently posted a window sticker for their 924 and I have the original window sticker for this car (the scans don't come out very well). One day, I am going to have it framed to hang in my office.

It's kinda cool to find out more about the history of the car

Has anyone gotten this from them? Is it worth the $100?
