I've noticed the rather LARGE sunroof that features on my 924 but dare not touch it for fear of what might happen lol (the seal has definitely seen better days!!). Is this supposed to be removable or just a tilting sunroof out of interest? One day i might be brave and have a go, but for the time being i'd rather just ask the question! _________________ 1980 924LUX |

You can pull it out alright. Real nice with it out. But the seal can be a problem. Sometimes it sets up a bit of a warbling sound with the turbulence, but opening a window a bit helps. With that sizeable gap in your rear hatch that shouldn't be a problem though!! _________________ 1983 - 924 (185K miles) - not mint

yes. they are great when they work....
They are removable, and the sequence to remove is in the driver's manual - something about putting key in position one, pressing 'open' (ahh, I'm talking about the electric sunroof here, but its poss that yours isn't electric?) and then unclipping the clips at the front and 'simply remove' - the manual has a tasty bit in it about ensuring it is clean so as not to dirty your clothes..
you may or may not still have a sunroof bag in the back to store it in, and it'll sit nicely in the back under the hatch...
great for summer, don't try opening one when its winter, I did and the iced up sunroof just stripped its own gears... ouch.
for more info, just ask _________________ 1998 BMW Z3 2.8 arctic silver & red

It'll certainly not be electric. It's not as hard to take off as it may look. When it's warmer, give it a go. _________________ 1983 - 924 (185K miles) - not mint

This is one of the nicer features of these cars and you are really going to like having it out. In my 924, I almost never use the A/C and prefer to drive with the top out, windows down, and wind in my hair.
There should be a bag to store the top in and it fits nicely in the cargo area (unless you've got some of those mondo sound pumpers back there like some of hte folks do) _________________ -Stu

The warbling sound can usually be elminated by adjusting the wind deflector at least it works for me when I have my roof out.

Never say never! - my 924 one's electric, OK its a later model, but I think that electric may have been avail in the turbos too? (sop available earlier)
anyway, I have no idea how the non electric ones work, so I'm gonna gracefully bow out of this! _________________ 1998 BMW Z3 2.8 arctic silver & red

Haven't I seen that picture somewhere before recently...?
Things aren't quite like that in Britain. Opening a sunroof is a good way of making it rain! _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

Ok Smoothie and others, With the sunroof using the rear latches to prop it up in a tilt, if you secure it by the strap is it safe to drive around hard? Hard turns, bumps in the road, expressways? _________________ Mike

I added another strap at the front, put a stronger strap at back and don't get too crazy while the roof's propped open. It's never happened to me, but I've heard they can come off. My own sunroof was apparently replaced at some point, so it might have happened to the previous owner. http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/smoothies931pics/detail?.dir=a174&.dnm=3279.jpg&.src=ph _________________ "..it's made in Germany. In all these years, I've not had a problem. Although I must admit that I see little use in propping it open. Since it's a manual operation anyway, if I want it open, I generally just take it out.
I remember when I picked up the 924S, I had a long drive to get it home and for the life of me I couldn't figure out how to get the power top out. I was really bummed about making the drive with it just raised a little _________________ -Stu

The pop-up option is great. It's quick and easy enough that you can reach back and pop it open while sitting at a stoplight.
Just be sure to use the securing strap! A few years ago I was cruising at ~50mph on a gusty day and I looked in the rear view mirror and saw the back of the sunroof lift up from a gust. I quickly grabbed onto the roof with one hand until I had a chance to pull over and secure it back down. Imagine someone driving behind me and all the sudden having a 3ft x 2ft fiberglass roof coming at their windshield at 50 mph
