Guys, what factors affect this? I've had the valve cover on the 77.5 924 off. Replaced the cam oiler elbow, cleaned out the oiler tube and put in a new cam cover gasket. I checked the clearances on all the lifters and they spec out fine. But there's still valve clatter on start-up after the car's been sitting for a day or so. Do I just live with this? Is the cam worn out of spec?

thanks

The tired engine in my 1980 does this as well. I've heard various explanations, one being it is "part of the 924's charm". I think that was from a UK member. Hopefully soon I'll know if a fresh engine does it too.

Yeah!

Mine does it too. It's quite loud on startup. I've had the cam checked for wear, the lifters are adjusted properly and the head just had a freshen-up, so there can't be much wrong with it... they just make that noise.

My brand new 1977 did that when I drove it out of the show room in 77.

Okay... Thanks, guys. I'll just call it charming and leave it at that. I guess the real worry would start if it clattered and didn't stop at all.
