Hey guys,
I have yet to drive my 924, because it is not yet running. I was wondering what this car is comparable to. I looked at the 4cyl. ford probe specs, and they look some what similar in hp, and the weight. I have a friend who drives a probe, and it feels pretty darn fast. Faster than my civic anyway. Anyone know if the 924 will be similar in acceleration?

The 924 is nothing great in the acceleration department. Comparable to my 2001 Cavalier.
However, I've never ever driven anything like a 924 around corners. If you have the suspension refreshed and properly aligned, you won't believe how the 924 can make most new cars feel terrible to drive. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

closest I would say is the first gen mazda rx7... their about the same quick, handle good but they are uglier and the engine is obviously different. _________________ 78 924 sold.

It's not like I care but how would you know that you actually beat those cars, maybe they weren't actually driving it as hard. _________________ 78 924 sold.

nu dudes.....there is NO other non-porsche car that compares...
I have driven...sport Mercs....sport jap-mobiles...Corrados and all kinds of cars...yes...new cars give you the feel that they drive easy....but once you hop into the 924 and take the first corner....you know why you love it.
A few days ago i driven 3 cars in one day...i brought a Mk3 Golf for inspection...then i brought the G60 Corrado for inspection....both these cars are cars of my friends....then i took the 924 for painting...and as soon as i hoped in and made a few meters i remembered why i love my car.
Well now i have a wide 924Carrera...but its still the 924...only corners a bit better _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

I saw a car doco recently comparing the Mazda rx7 with the 924.
Very similar performance in the straight but the 924 is better looking and handles better. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

1961 Pontiac Tempest. Delorean designed, this car also had a 4-banger derived from 1/2 of a v-8, rear transmission with transaxle giving it a 50/50 weight distribution. Conceptually very similar, but of course the Pontiac is a much heavier dinosaur. Check them out, they're kind of cool. _________________ 1977.5 924 "Martini" head / New Old Stock rebuild

C'mon even when both cars were new, when compared to the 924, the RX-7 had no class and never allowed you to become "one" with the car.
Besides they are rust buckets and oil burners! _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

So what you're saying is, virtually no car can compare with the 924 around corners? Because I'd agree, but I've never driven a 928. _________________ 1977.5 924 "Martini" head / New Old Stock rebuild

I dunno.... I took my 924s in the hills today... It was great... So awesome.... I mean I was hanging with a solstice, the car is awesome thats all I can say.
the 928 is a touring car, its made for the open roads, not the corners... _________________ Proud owner of

I think what everyone is getting at is that there's no car that is as old as the 924 and as cheap as the 924 that could really be considered to be better than the 924.
I would contend that the 924 is old, noisy and rough. And not particularly fast!
But for some strange reason, to my eyes it's exceptionally good looking and to me, it's just great fun to drive! Everything about the way it handles is just-so... you sit low and the shifter is just in the right place and the wheel sits in your lap (maybe a little low but hey, nobody's perfect!) and pedals are placed just right... then you throw it into a corner and it feels just right! Light and agile.
I'm reasonably sure that 99.9% of the people here bought a 924 because it was the only Porsche they could afford, not because it's such a brilliant car (lets face it, even from new it was never held in very high regard). But the fact that there's a few people here who can afford and do have "better" cars (even "better" Porsches!), but still go back to the 924, I think indicates just how well the cars perform. _________________ '80 924 Turbo |
