Gentlemen and Ladies
the good news:
I was very lucky and ended up with a nice black 1979 924 that was practically abandoned and only had to sink a little cash into it to get it on the road.
the bad news:
The shifter rods have slowly been giving way and are very worn.
My mechanic has just pulled them out, has any one on this board actually replaced the rods or repaired them in any way.
some questions:
where could I find replacements in North America?
can they be fabricated ?
can I use shifter rods from a 944 or any other car ?
thank you in advance for any help or ideas
Peter

Welcome.

It would help if you stated which transmission you have.

You have either a 4-speed Audi based transmission, or a 5-speed Porsche Snail transmission, unless a PO (Previous Owner) had the car converted to a 5-speed Audi-based transmission.

Doesnt he just need the bushings hopefully the ball cup thing at one of the
ends is ok after the bushing goes metal to metal contact isnt good.
What di your mech. say axactly. You can just get a complete set of bushings and put it all back together. I did it and got nice shifts now.

thanks Joe
we are going to try and replace the bushings first and then go from there.
by the way I tried to locate shifter rods to see if I could find them
any where and the parts people including the porsche dealer said the availability of them is = 0, including in germany.
please let me know if you guys know of where to get parts
where they actually have the parts.
so bushings it is
5 speed transmission by the way.

From the FAQ section above:

The snailshell trans also can suffer from wear in the linkage, but is less likely to require replacement of metal parts. In this case, only bushings must be replaced. However, some of them are less easy to get at than with the Audi design trans.

Easiest to access are the bushings at the shifter; 4 identical bushings accessed simply by pulling up the shift boot. Part number for these is 999 924 002 40. Simply remove the e-clips (2) holding the shift rods to the shift lever, remove the old bushings, and slide in the new bushings.

The bushings back at the transmission, accessible only from underneath the car (reaching around to the top side of the transmission are harder to change. The are part # 911 424 223 03. They are also used on the 914, and can be purchased from more common sources like Performance Products as such (914 shift linkage bushings). In this case, the cross pin holding the joint together (it's designed like a u-joint) must be driven out to one side. Then the joint is separated. A 13mm bolt is removed and the aluminum joint casting can then be removed from the car. The plastic bushings can be replaced by hand at this point.
