well, i put the headlight switch in the on position (middle) and the taillights go on. i put the switch all the way down, and the headlights light up, but they DONT flip up, so what i got is headlights that are basically lighting up my engine compartment. i have no idea where to start with fixing this problem, so maybe this has happened before for other people. im assuming its the motor, but it worked not too long ago. is there some tell tale sign that i could find to say what the problem is?

i had the exact opposit thing....my headlights poped up but they did not fire a single photon ....my problem was the switch.

I sugest starting by geting someone to operate the swithch from the inside and you listening to the headlight motor to see if it makes any sound. If it does not make any sound at all take a multimeter and check if there is voltage at it when switch is in ON position...if no voltage there...try replacing the relay of the motor or maby the switch itself....mine melted because of the high amperage and the melted plastic covered some copper parts so it did not conduct anymore.

Good luck.

Turn the knob on the motor, if there is power getting to it it will start by itself.
The most common problem is the motor relay and plug contacts get corroded.

Mine do the same time from time to time. A little jiggle of the relay cures it for awhile but cleaning the plug and the relay seating contacts helps. Also replacing the boot that covers those is a good idea. They're available on ebay for about $15 shipped (US).
