Faffed around yesterday trying to get the car going. Starts but wouldn't run. Checked the fuel to injectors again, fine. Dad checked spark by shorting the points out, fine. Turned her over and she went. Hurrah! Not running properly so checked timing, fine. Noticed fuel pump relay was hot and clicking. Disconnected the air meter wire which stopped the relay clicking away. Adjusted the air meter sensor plate. Reconnected the wire and the car ran lovely. Even though she still has bad old fuel in her.
So I've just been to start her to go to the MOT garage and she won't run again. Starts every time I turn the key but just won't run. Dad has buggered off for the weekend so I'm stuffed. I must be missing something. Aux air valve seems to be working as does the cold start valve. Serves me right for not running her for years!
Anyone think of something I'm missing? Pretty please with bells on?

make sure you are getting spark, while cranking and after.
as well verify that the fuel pump is running. _________________ 3 928s, |

Lizard, am I being dense here? Are you saying that I could have spark whilst cranking but not once I release the key from the start position? There is spark whilst cranking but as she won't run other than for the half second it takes to start I don't know how to check. Must have had spark yesterday! Would that point to an ignition switch problem? Could be dodgy connections? The fuel pump runs with the ignition on when I raise the sensor plate, also when I disconnect the wire from the air meter the pump runs continuosly with the ignition on. _________________ 1978 924na |

Yeah - the ignition switch can and often does die, this is one of the ways.
Reach under the dash, remove the plug from the back of the switch, and hotwire the car. For now. _________________ Vaughan Scott

Hmmm, you'd think I'd have seen enough telly to know exactly what hotwiring actually means. Is it just connecting the wires to bypass the ignition switch? _________________ 1978 924na |

yes that is exactly what it means, and you can find what pins to jumper by looking at the electrical diagrams in haynes _________________ 3 928s, |

Great. I'll put my intelligent head on and go look at the book.

Ok so my intelligent head didn't work. Or maybe it did cos it stopped me from breaking anything. Took the wire plug off, looked at the diagram and couldn't find where the grey wire goes. Gave up! Better than blowing the car up. I once replaced a shock absorber and when taking the spring off thought it was a bit difficult. Until the spring hit me on the head! Had forgotten to put the spring compressor on! Donkey. Oops I digressed. Put the wire plug back on and tried it for the hell of it. She started! Wheee. Kept cutting out though. The handbrake warning light would be lit whilst the engine was running and then a second before the engine cut out the warning light would go off. Figure that's the ignition switch? _________________ 1978 924na |

it is hard to say, though I would recommend trying a new switch, as it will just get worse _________________ 3 928s, |

Yeah I'll try and get one tomorrow. Luckily there's a good spares place up the road. Do you know if the switch can be dismantled so I can change the tumblers to fit the original key? If not I'll do the door locks to match the new ignition switch.
Thanks! _________________ 1978 924na |

I don't think you need to change the tumbler to change the switch, the switch will come out separate to the ignition barrel (I think!) - I had a problem I suspected to be the switch and I swapped it out and it wasn't. Worth trying this 'in car' before removing the ignition barrel etc - get your replacement switch (poss from breakers or spares place) and pull the plug off the back of the existing switch, plug the new switch on and start her with a screwdriver... _________________ 1998 BMW Z3 2.8 arctic silver & red

Yeah, the electrical part of the ignition switch (about $20USD over here IIRC) is held onto the back of the mechanical lock by one screw.
You need to simultaneously jump from the battery (30) to ignition (15) and the touch the hot wire to the starter (50). Easy. _________________ Vaughan Scott
