Ok old timers... or young ones who have the knowledge.
This is off Porsches ... for the most part but could be applied to anyone restoring a older Porsche.
I am looking at American muscle cars and would like some advice from those in the know. If a car has parts of the frame that are rotted... how much work is it to cut out a section and weld in a new/ replacement part? I assume it does matter where the rot is located but what is involved?
No I would not normally consider cars with rot in the frame but man I really want a 1969 Dodge Charger and the prices or right out of the ball park! For a decent running and not rotted car they are $10-$20 K depending on the state of their body and interior... plus what engine they have.
Oh and for those who are worried I am not selling my 1982 924... she is family
Anyway can anyone give me any advice, help on this topic? _________________ 1982 924

It's pretty simple stuff...just as long as the frame is not borken at any point. Just cut back until you are into good metal agian...make a templete , scribe onto new metal and weld in. When doing a "box" frame...only cut out one side at a time. 9 times out of 10..it's the inside of the rail that goes bad. On the dodges and GM cars of the 60's 70's...right over top of the rear wheels.
good luck _________________ 1976 924

If the rot is in a vital location where you are worried about structural integrity, you can "box" the frame, if only in that general location. Really not that much to it.
By the way, I'm an old Mopar fan myself, and have been looking for a '70 Challenger. Have you seen the new (concept) Challenger? I don't know how to upload a pic, or I'd post one....[/img] |

It is in the front frame rail some where. I have not seen the car yet. It is a 1969 Dodge charger. It is not a numbers matching car but it comes with a 440 and 727 trans.
It will need the interior gone over... bet it is mostly missing, needs the 1/4 lowers replaced (he has the 1/4 skins) and one section of the floor boards replaced. It is reported as a 10 by 10 section. I hope he means 10" by 10". Oh and it is in pieces.
Anyway I hope to go and look at it saturday morning. Then I can wish I had the money to buy it. He is only asking $1500 for it. I think it is a bargain but I need to sell my 1977 924 first to have the money. Unless he wants to trade
I saw the challenger that they are talking about making... I love it! _________________ 1982 924
