Hi all,

I know I've posted a myriad of stuff about my NA recently, but as I've moving house in about a week, the 931 will have to be trailered to my brothers. The handbrake is seized. Am I right in thinking that the way to unseize it is to remove the wheel and give the disc a good hammering?

any help or other suggestions welcomed.

it will move with the shoes seized, but I'd like it to roll freely.

You'd damage the disc.
Maybe the drum housing with a wooden mallet after taking off the disc.

As Ozzie says drum brakes can sometimes be shocked free by a couple of well placed blows. Depending how long it has been standing a short tow can sometimes snap them free too.

Have you tried reverse, sometimes it will free stuck shoes?

The hub of the rotor is the drum....

Do you know whether it's the shoes stuck to the drums (rotors), or the cable siezed to it's housing, or the handle not releasing?

I know it's too late for you now, Sean, but for future reference, if a car is to be stored for any length of time, then the handbrake ought to be released and the car chocked to stop it rolling away.

Also operating the clutch once every couple of weeks helps, too. A stuck clutch is a real bugger to free!

hi all,

first, reverse would be great if the car actually ran!

second, the handbrake was already seized when we bought the motor - I don't think we've ever applied it.

third, not sure if its the cable or shoes, is there an easy way to tell?

Cheers all...

Well it could be all the discs have grabbed and jammed as well as the handbrake.
For discs try to separate the pads and the discs with a bit of leverage or retracting tool taking care not to score/damage either.
When free pump the brake back up again.
First I'd raise and remove front wheels and turn to check brakes.

For the rear check to see if the handbrake cable is loose.
If it is not seized it should be loose at the drum end.
Operate the lever and check the tension changes.
If it is seized then start looking at ways to get it free.
You may need to cut it off and get a new one.

If the cable is free and the brake is still engaged then a few good whacks with a wood/plastic mallet should free it up.

If the car has sat for a long time your wheel bearings could be suspect.
Hit the drum housing not the disc.
Hammer are always good at hitting objects near the target.

If the car isn't running, you'll need to winch it onto the trailer anyway, so it doesn't sound as if it's too much of an issue. It's not as if the wheels are locked solid...

you're absolutely right, and we did that when we brought it to my house and started the work. Its just that I'd like to make it as painless as poss as I'm paying someone to move it (actually on a flatbed) rather than hiring van/trailer etc, so the longer it takes the potentially more expensive it gets!

I have a selection of hammers ranging from an 8 ounce tapping hammer right through to a 15 pound sledge hammer if you get stuck!

Seriously though, let me know if you need a hand dude.
