I want to replace the exterior door handle on the pass door.

Did the search, no results, Haynes gives the following procedure -

20 Door handle (exterior) - removal and installation
1 Lift the rubber moulding away from the door just above the door lock and remove the screw situated in the recess.
2 Push the door handle forward towards the hinge and extract the back of the handle first. The front end is held by a fork. The lock barrel may now be removed. If the lock is damaged take it to the Porsche dealer to have the correct lock installed to fit your door key
3 When replacing the handle make sure the handle lever engages with the, door lock.
4 When removing the barrel lock always leave the key in the lock or the tumblers and springs will fall out,

I don't understand point 1, the only screw I can see, is when I open the door, there is a screw above the lock mechanism, which I undid a couple of turns and the handle moves.

Anybody done this?

Thanks
Arthur

yes, that's right. The handle is held in place by that one screw above the lock mechanism. When you remove that screw you can slide the handle forward then lift up the rear of the handle and slide it backwards. You need to pop the white nylon thing that connects the handle to the wire connected to the lock mechanism.

Hard to explain, obvious when you see it and do it.

Instead of removing the white plastic lock peice, on the tumbler there is a screw holding that to the lock. depending on whether your door panel is off or not (im assuming that it is not) you may or may not be able to get to this screw easily. my door panels are off so ive had no problem with getting to it for there are holes in the door after you take the door panel off. Then just it towards the front to get the backside out of itand then towards the rear to get the "fork" out of the front. hope this helps.

OK... could someone please take this a step further...

I need to replace the seals on the door handles on the 924S. Will this be easier if I remove the inside door panel or can it be accomplished just as easily without removing the door panel?

Thanks

i would think itd be easier to take the panel out, because you gotta unscrew the lock thing, and you can only get to it from that side of the door.

Yes, much easier with door panel off. But that, too, is easy. My wife can have a door apart in the time it takes me to walk around the car. She's much better at that than I am!

This may be a no-brainer, but make sure the window is up!

OK, maybe I'm having a blonde day, but I'll be stuffed if I can remove my exterior door handles. I've read the Haynes description til my eyes bleed, along with the helpful hints here - but I'm still stuck. I can't figure out how you can possibly remove the handle without detaching the activating rod (reverse lever?) via the plastic bit on the bottom of it. Or maybe you have to detach it from the top where it connects to the handle mechanism...?

I've even removed the interior panel to get a better look at it all - here's a photo with the rod in question highlighted. As you can see I've removed the "white plastic bit" that attaches to the back of the barrel. Why is it there's no mention anywhere of the rod...?

Thanks in advance,

Gavin.

Usual story... post a question to find an answer yourself... I simply wasnt pulling hard enough on the rod to remove it. Still cant see how you could possibly remove a handle without taking the interior panel off though...

any one else have alot of trouble getting to the screw on the back of the tumbler? My window track obstructs a screw driver getting in there ^^ It took me like all of one day just to repaint my door handles. ugh.

Although it's a bit of a PITA, it's still easier to pop BOTH plastic connectors off, after releasing the door handle.

You remove the screw from the doorjam, then manipulate the door handle to remove it from it's position. then while holding the door handle alongside the door, you reach in with a pair of long nose pliers to disconnect both plastic connectors.

Reconnecting the plastic links to install the door handle, use the reverse of the above procedure.

You DO NOT NEED TO DISCONNECT the plastic links and completely detach the door handle from the car to replace the plastic seal/gasket pieces that fit between the door handle and the door. The larger piece can be slipped onto the smaller side, and slides all the way across to the larger side where it belongs, without disconnecting the linkages. The small side goes right on to it's spot.

Finally got around to replacing the seals for the door handles and this advice was spot on. VERY easy to do once I got around to actually doing it

Thanks
