i've looked a thousand times, and the haynes manual picture is about as helpful as an elephant in a shopping trolley (?) and i'm damned if i can find my engine number!

It should be on a machined-flat surface near the flywheel timing window - intake side of the engine, below the coil, just before the bellhousing. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."
