I wouldn't want to drive one of those in the rain, on dusty roads, or in the snow!!

The claims make for an interesting argument. Does anyone know if mounting a turbo further from the exhaust ports have any real benefit? Not in the extreme manner here, but not hugging the exhaust ports?

Peace!

Seen it done to v8's with twin turbos due to lack of space up front.
Works fine apparently.

One of the 928 guys on Rennlist has a mid mounted turbo installed. Since it is a retrofit to a normally aspirated engine the expected turbo lag is not noticed. IIRC the toughest part was setting up the lubrication with a separate tank nd pump.

Just goes to prove a turbo anywhere, is better than no turbo at all.

Yea they have to put those on Pontiac Firebirds and Trans Ams due to lack of space unless you take out a bunch of stuff.

Got to admit though, the kit they provide makes it very simple to install a turbo...

Maybe even simpler by pulling out the A/C equipment under the dash and mount one in the glove compartment!

Seriously, this looks very interesting. There would be plenty of room where the muffler is right now to mount one of these.

I guess the main advantege is that you eliminate the heating and space problems that follow a convetinal turbo installation.

They also feed the turbo with oillines from an adapter plate on the oilfilter mounting, but the have to add am extra oiltank/pump at the rear.

Read some threads over at rennlist and there have been sucessful installastion on 928's with over 400 rwhp and no turbo-lag. As one 928 owner commented:

"simply put..this system is like having GT cams..on steroids....nice pull on the low end..and then that endless push you in your seat....do you have the guts to keep the gas pedal floored feeling"

the STS FAQ gives some good answers, but keep in mind that this "FAQ" is placed on a commercial site promoting their own products.

no turbo lag, as in;

I just put this turbo on a car that didn't have a turbo before, and theres no lag"

".nice pull on the low end"

...thats your lag

and then

"that endless push you in your seat"

...thats your boost

If it didn't have any lag, he would be saying from the moment I put my foot down that endless..

If you look at the pics, it has a huge hotside, with a small coldside, there is just no way that combination, is going to spool up anyway near as fast as a front mounted standard turbo.

They probably did a damn good job sizing the turbo, to run at the back, minimising lag. But if they did the same and mounted it up front, the lag would be a lot less.
