Hi Guys,
I was driving along yesterday and the revs suddenly dropped and then the engine cut out. The engine is turning over, but not firing. The car endded up coming home on the back of an AA truck .
We've established that there is fuel to the fuel distributor, but are not sure whether there is fuel to the injectors. There does seem to be a spark.
The car is a 1980 2.0 924.
I'm not sure what to check next.

| This probably won't help, but I had a similasr problem. When I was driving, I lost all power, my car didn't die, but could hardly make it across an intersection before the light changed. Turns out that the vauum advance mecahnism or whatever it is called, came off of the distributor. When you take the round thing off the ditributor, you'll see that there is a little pin in the distributor that hooks on to it. It somehow came off, and I was barely able to start the car, and it would die when you take the foor off the gas. |

Check for spark by pulling one spark plug from the cylinder head and holding it close (1/8") from a good ground with the spark plug wire attached to it.
If no spark, I would suspect the ignition module inside of the distributor, if the car has breakerless ignition. I know that the earlier Euro spec engines had conventional break point ignition, but I don;t know about the later cars.
U.S. market cars all came with breakerless ignition, and in the 1980 and up U.S. cars the ignition module inside the distributor has a tendency to fail when they get up over 100K miles. |

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replies.
The vaccum pipe is on the distributor and I have a spark, so I think it may be the fuel system.
The car does have the contactless distributor.

| I would suggest fuel pump or fuel pump relay. I had a similar problem in my old 924, the RAC man rigged up a temporary power feed from my tail lights! Got me home though.... |

Do you hear the pump(s) running when you turn the key to "accessory" position? It should cycle on and then turn off once it's built up pressure.
On some cars, once the pump builds up pressure and stops, you can touch the rear view mirror adjustment switch on the door panel and you will hear the pump cycle again. (This is with the engine off, the key on in the "accessory" position.) I know it sounds wierd and wrong but it's really a handy feature for testing the fuel pump to be sure the relay is working. _________________ '80 924 n/a SOLD |

Hi Guys,
Thanks again for the advise.
The timing belt is still on, although I haven't checked whether it has slipped yet.
I can hear the fuel pump running when I turn on the ignition. I've been told that I can use a wire to by pass the pump relay and use that to pump the fuel through constantly, so I can check the system.
I've been told that there can be problem with rust from the fuel tank getting into the injection system, so I'm going to have a look at that as well.
I'll have to try the wingmirror switch.

Hi guys,
I did turn out to be the timing belt. It had jumped a few teeth and was slack but was still on the pullye. The cars is running again now.
