Hey all,

In the UK winter means road chaos and mass panic, to get ahead of it all do any of you have any recommendations for winter tyres?

Cheers
Rich

— I'm not gonna discuss tyre brands, dear.
— Consider if you want to drive on summer tyres next summer.
— Get yourself a spare set of wheels to use during winter.
— Change all FOUR tyres and buy them NEW!
- Take two and you'll end up doing pirouettes.
- New because you'd like to be on the save side the next few years and you don't know where the old ones have been…
— Have these ready before the cold sets in! …Your local tyreshop will appreciate that, believe me.
— Condition your summer wheels/tyres before you put them in storage and note the position they had on the car.
— Change back to summer (harder) tyres in time.
— Drive safely & enjoy.

Cheers.

I have a spare set of spiderwebs so they will be autumn (Now) / winter only and I'll change back next year.

My normal tyres are all weather so a compromise that normally works, but seeing as we have sleet on the hills already I want to get proper new winter tyres sorted now.

Marking their location is a good idea.

The reason I want them is because we have 3 cars to choose from:
Lotus Esprit (RWD/Mid engine/Turbo/265 bhp/~1200kg)
Smart Roadster (RWD/Mid engine/Turbo/80bhp/1100kg)
Porsche 924 Turbo (RWD/50% weight distibution/Turbo/177bhp/~1200kg)

The Lotus is mental all the time (And blows up regularly), the Smart is lethal in slippery conditions...So the Porsche makes most sense in winter!

Now tell me about brands please

Are you going to use studded or friction tyres? Nokian tyres is probably the most trusted brand here. http://www.nokiantyres.com/

No studs, I dont' think they would be a good idea!

We don't get an enormous amount of snow and ice but I want to remain mobile, early this year it was chaos with packed snow and ice everywhere for months.

Will check out that link, thanks

Rich

I had extremely good luck with Nokian Hakkawhatevers (Hakkapaeltta??). The Fins know snow and it turned a rear drive 535i into a car I wasn't afraid to drive anywhere.

I've had about 6 different brands of winter tires and the best have been Blizzak WS-50's and WS-60's. Don't bother with the WS-25's, they suck so bad I can't even believe they are from the same manufacturer.

I've used Nokian's and they are fine, but not as good as the Blizzaks. I have also used Firestone Winterfires, Pirelli S2 snows, General Artic Altimax, Michelin Artic Alpin... all good, but not as good.

Yah ( i know we are starting something here ) my Hakka's outlasted the Blizzaks my buddy had 3:1 and he had a lighter car. I don't know but the hakka's could throw snow with only one drawback when compared to blizaks and that was ice. The Blizaks won that one by a small margin in my eyes.

Hakka's? Never heard of those, so I can't comment. The winter tires I've owned last me 3 seasons before time for replacement. I typically replace them at about half wear so that I can sell them on craigslist or ebay to spread the cost out farther.

Its an even newer design now and a 70 year history. So, likely one of the first winter tires. Seriously good tire from my experience

Ahhhh, forgot that was their name of their winter tires. Perhaps worthy of another review after all of these years.
