|

Ok to start, I am starting from the ground up on this car. I have been trying to get it to start. I do have a spark in the engine, and through crosswireing from another fuse, I now know that the fuel pump is bad, and I have another on the way.
Anyway the problem I have run into now is that the fuse designated to power the fuel pump isnt getting power. I replaced the fuel pump relay, and the fuse still isnt activating my test light. From looking at my Haynes manual, and just looking at the wires themselves, I cant figure out a way to tell what wires run from the relay to the fuse.
If there is some secret to this I would love to know if not PLEASE teach me what I need to be looking for here. My train of thought is that if I replace the wiring that connects the relay to the fuse, then all should be well. Again I am new to this whole deal so I could easily be overlooking something obvious so I am asking you guys for help.
Thanks in advance. _________________ 1982 Porsche 924 Targa |

Justin,
Removing the relay and putting a jumper between the 30 and 87 receptacles should provide power to the fuse and pump(s). If no power you have a problem on the relay/fuse board or a bad wire from the battery. If you have power with the relay jumpered but not with the relay installed, there is a problem with the relay, the circuit from the ignition switch or the tach signal circuit from the ignition system. BTW the relay is only suppose to power the pump for a few seconds during cranking then doesn't run full time unless the engine is running.

You're gonna need a test light or a voltmeter. If you are not (yet - you will be soon) an electrician then go with the light.
With the light you are going to trace back to find where power (voltage) quits making it through the circuit. There are no short cuts. This is what you need to do. _________________ John

These tips are really helpful. It is just going to take time and patience, as is everything on this car. But it will be worth it Im sure.
Another question, All of the plugs (mostly female) that go into the back of the main fuse panel. Is there a specific way to attach them? Im not talking about the large square plugs Im talking about the individuals. Some of them have come undone, and some dont seem to make any connection or that they dont even belong there (too much plastic for a metal to metal contact). I havent been able to find any type of diagram or anything to help here. If you know of where I can find one or if you have one I would love this help.
If you look in a Haynes Manual on pg 238 Im talking about stations G and H.
Thanks you guys are a real help. _________________ 1982 Porsche 924 Targa |

Yes, the G's have specific functions and have to be matched to the correct wires. I don't have any notes on the H's, by if I'm remembering correctly, they're just 12v+ all the time, so if that's correct, the larger female spade connectors can go on any "H" - you can verify that with a voltmeter or test light.
Here's where the G's attach on my car - http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=18476&start=11 _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

That is really helpful, one quick question, those ones that arent connected, do they have plastic tips with alot of empty space that really cant connect? Thanks again. _________________ 1982 Porsche 924 Targa |

| I'm involved in a similar fuse panel/fuel pump squirmish. She runs fine when jumpered as described above, but I assume it's unwise to run the fuel pump continuously. On gang plug "C", #15 has scorched, and under inspection, the wire became seperated, leaving the female ferule inside the plastic gang plug. Did you check for this? It sounds a similar condition. Is there a proper way to replace (extract) the female plus in these multi/gang plugs? I've enjoyed reconditioning this car, but for me, electric are not that satisfying, due to the large number of variables. ie. I have three fuel pump relays (none of them new) but what are the odds that they have all gone south? |

To clean the male pins, scrape them with a small sharp flat blade screwdriver. For the females, a set of small files usually contain one that'll fit. Then a bit of dielectric grease should help them to resist burning again.
More (than you may need or want to know) about the pins here - http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=5758 _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."
