Hi

My 1982 (ROW) 924na Manual is accelerating with a good pull up to about 5000 rpm, but then the pull just dissapears, and it feels like I have to push the engine up to the redline. in other words: there is no action above 5000 rpm. But it is smooth without any missfires or engine cut-out.

When reading about others that enjoy to take it to the redline, I figure there must be something wrong.

So I need to locate the problem, but what should I inspect/replace?

BTW: the engine does have serious ticking noise (sound like a diesel) so I guess it needs a valva adjustment, and there is an issue with high idle after engine is run hot. Not sure if these things are related tough.

Check to make sure your distributor is advancing as the rpm's go up.

It's a little tedious, but measure the distance between the 5 and 10 degree marks on your flywheel (or 0 and 10 or whatever) and make marks every 5 or 10 degrees on the flywheel with a marker - up to about 35 degrees. Then, with a timing light connected, raise the rpm's and watch that the marks move past.

Timing makes a big difference in peak power!

Or get an advance timing light. . .way less tedious (and fun to play with).

Your car may be leaning out too. . .changed the fuel filter lately?

The 924 engine does not make much hp, and the max is in the 4XXXrpm range.

Just what do you expect from the engine when you have already exceed the rpm where it makes the most power?

I know the 924 isn't a bullet, I usually drive a 350 HP tuned 928S4, but the last two weeks I've been using the 924 to work, wich is about the time it takes to get "normalized" after driving the 928

So ignore the debate about the 924 been powerful or not, the the car does have a noticable "pull" up to about 5000 rpm, but then it suddenly dissapears, wich I find strange. Especially after reading reviews wich state that the 924 engine must be driven hard to the redline to perform.

So I am assuming there is something wrong with it, and my best guess so far is: timing, fuel pump or vacume. But Since I dont know where to start looking I am asking here.

Speedster, how many miles on your car? I think that the older cars get they probably just loose their peppy-ness. And have you tried just putting fuel injector cleaner in? That might help a little bit.

If your 924 is equipped with a catalytic convertor it could be partially plugged. Also, it could be running lean which would explain the dead top end and the hot running.
