so.. i got my tires balanced at a friend's shop about a week ago. made a huge difference in my ride comfort/stability. however, now they appear to be less than balanced again. it would seem that they've been getting worse and worse over the course of the week. my ride is noticeably reverting back to the shaky, bumpy ride that it was pre-balancing. i'm assuming that it's a byproduct of the fact that i need new shocks. i'm fairly sure that the ones i have are straight from the factory and have never been changed, and are therefore highly worn out. but i'm not sure if bad shocks would cause noticeable, progressive tire-unbalancing. so.. i'm wonder what all of your opinions are on the matter. what do you guys think this is a symptom or byproduct of? _________________ '81 US 931 "Rochelle" |

Sounds like you may have lost one of the weights that balances your wheels. Check to see if the weights are still in the same place they were after your wheels were balanced.

Stick on weights suck. I just got my 5 redone.
Make sure if you have it done again that they just don't add more weight but take off the old stickers and put on all new.
1, the older weights are likely to come off, that's what's happening now.
2, you don't want to add more weight to one side just to make up for all the weights on the other side. |

How old are your tires (in the US, the year is the last 2 numbers on the DOT number)? _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

interesting. in all honesty, i don't know anything about this process. however, i do know that the cats who did the work for me have been workin' on porsches for about 30 years apiece, so i'm figurin' that they knew what to do. ...still, i'll check things out.
now, paul, as for the age of my tires... i'll have to go check tomorrow cause it's quite dark and wet outside right now, and frankly, i'm too tired to go out there and get me and my flashlight rained on. i'll get back to you about that tomorrow for sure, though. in the meantime, i can say that they're relatively old. there's a small but noticeable amount of cracking going on, but nothing major. i do intend to get new ones soon, but i've gotta wait till i pull in some more cash from this brand new job of mine.
blah. i'm done rambling. _________________ '81 US 931 "Rochelle"

Stay out of the twisties if you tires are more than 7 years old since their speed rating has expired. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

oh yeah, definitely, man. i don't do any racing, and i take it easy on corners when i'm on the road. new tires are my first priority when i have some cash, and shocks are a close second. after that, maybe i'll head down to the track for a spell. in the meantime, she's just takin' me to work. _________________ '81 US 931 "Rochelle" |

I see you are from Newark! I've spent many nights at the Gateway Hilton at the train station and have eaten many dinners at my favorite restuarant in the world (so far) Don Pepe's.

aww, man. wish i could relate. unfortunately, i've only ever driven through that Newark. You're talkin' about the one in New Jersey. I'm in the one in Delaware. The one that's pronounced like it's spelled. not the one that seems to get it's 'a' confused with the sound an 'e' would make.
that restaurant does sound nice, though. perhaps i'll take my lady friend there sometime when she's not expecting it. ...yeah... that's a fun idea. i think i will. heh thanks for the inspiration! *thumbsup* _________________ '81 US 931 "Rochelle" |
