Hi everyone,

I recently got new wheels for my 924S. They're cup rims from a 993 (I think) and they look just great!! I will post some pix when I recharge my camera.
But I do have a slight problem and thought that maybe one of you knows what I can do about it.

Well here it is:
The front rims are 6J R16 and they fit perfectly! The rears are 8J R16, so they are kinda wide. I installed them, took the car for a test drive and the rear left tire seems to grind on the side panel (or fender). And it only seem to be the left one, cuz I couldn't hear any grinding on the right and there where no "scratchs" on the right tire as well. After I took a closer look, I noticed that the left wheel (or maybe only the tire) sticks out more than the right one Why could that be?? The rims and tires are the same and neither of the side panels is modified. The car did have any serious damage in the rear (just a little dent on the right next to the bumper). Is there some thing that can be adjusted on the rear axel?? What can I do about this??

Thanks in advance
Luke

The easiest thing to do is to install 6 inch wheels on both the front and back.

Check to see a spacer is installed in the wheel that sticks out.

Hi,

yeah 6 or 7 inch rims would be better there's no spacers. But i don't get why one sticks out more than the other?? is there something wrong with the axel?? something to setup??

The Porsche Factory Optional Wheel set is 6" in the front and 7" in the rear. 8" wheels are too wide to fit in the rear without modifying the sheet metal.

If one wheel stick out further than the other you may have a bent trailing arm. Is the body sitting level from side to side? Maybe you have a mis-adjusted torsion bar.

Hi again,

i did some further research and found out that most of these cars (at least here in germany/europe) have the left wheel sticking out a bit more than the right one. It's usually about 5-10mm difference. It seems to be normal on these cars... I still want to find out if there is a way to adjust that. Since I don't have my own garage I can't really take a look at it, but want to figure it out before I have the chance to do anything.

I'll post more when I find something.
Do any of you know anything about this ??

That's interesting about the 5-10mm difference right-left. My own car has a similar difference which didn't become a problem until I started using 6x16 Fuchs 5-spoke wheels from an old 911. With them, the rear-right side was fine, but the left rubbed. I've been assuming this was due to some collosion repair not being done exactly right to the rear-left quarter panel. -But maybe it's due to a factory 5-10mm difference between sides? My solution, though not available to you with the 924S, was to replace the stock spacer on the left with thinner spacing.

Yep, same difference on the 931 too. I've heard 951 folks mention the same thing. One of Porsche's funny jokes.

I ended up rolling the fender lips in the rear. I was rubbing with 225/50/16 tires on 8x16" ET52 wheels - just on the driver side. The tires (Bridgestones) have big curb rash protectors on them, which probably made them more apt to rub.

Hi again,

Well I finally worked it out. I basically shaved about 4mm of the folded part of the rear fender, sealed it and presto!

No more annoying grinds, nothing! And I get to keep those nice, wide wheels!

I'd post some pics, but I currently don't have any web space available.
So my avatar will have to suffice for now

8" will fit. I have 16-8" w/235's no rub at all. Go 245 and it will rub. Of course the O/S is 49mm instead of 53mm but 8" wide will fit.

Now that you have shaved the sheet metal you have also wiped out the zinc coating to prevent rust so now you need to prep the fender lip or without any doubt it will rust eventually.

I just wish I saw that "Fender rolling how-to" before I did this, or better yet came up with a similar solution...hehe

I already preped it so I hope there won't be any rust.

Yeah... my tires are 245. I got them with the rims and they have only about 700km on them and they're Continetal ContiSport. It would be just too expensive for me to get 235 of the same quality, especially here in Germany.

Anyways I'm just happy I got rid of that rub!!
