Today I found a rather unusual cause to a hard start problem I've had for quite some time and thought I would share to save someone the time and agony I went through.
The car would fire on the initial turnover, but not start. Subsequent tries yielded no firing unless I waited 30 seconds or so for the thermal time switch to reset before trying again. Depressing the pedal would eventually get it started, but only after several minutes of cranking. Symptoms were the same as a bad cold start valve, but the valve checked out OK when removed and checked for spray pattern. Spraying starting fluid in the air intake would get it started.
Well, today I was going to wire in a switch so I could control the cold start injector manually. I slid back the black rubber boot from the cold start valve connector and low and behold, one of the wires was broke off. Apparently, when I checked the CSV for proper spray pattern, the wire must have made temporary contact. The wire broke in the middle of the pin, not at the wire. Apparently, the pin got weak after repeated connecting and un-connecting. BTW, those pins are just about impossible to remove without damaging, so just a heads up. _________________ 1981 931 (Concours)
