as you may know, the heater fans do in fact lack. mine, doesnt work at all. is there any common issues with these that would make it work? all the heat i get into my car is from me moving, so when im at a stop my windows fog up. is it worth getting a used one from someone on the board, or buying a new motor and making my own fan so its strong?

also, when im moving, the heat will come out of the floor vents and the defrosters, fairly well at that, but when i switch the main vents off from DEFROST, cold, outside air comes in. whats the deal with this? ive searched some and seen that people have said that the cold air may pass over the heater core as oppsosed to through it, but i dont get why my defrosters and floor vents are nice and heated while the main vents arent. im perplexed.

kinda off topic from my original questions, but when i shift into reverse, some of the time it makes a grinding noise. i quickly back off and do it agian and its fine. yes, the clutch is all the way in. whats the deal?

another off topic-er. it may be just becuase the starter was installed wrong, but some of the times, i mean MOST of the time when i go to start the car, the starter will engage and make its whirring noise, but doesnt hit the flywheel and turn it over. its funny. my friend will be in the car with me sometimes, and itll happen, and he will say "what, is the battery dead?" as the fuel pump is running and the starter is whirring. it is quite humorous. anyway, itll take a few tries to get it going, but i havent noticed a pattern yet. ill try. this may or may not be a common 924 problem, but ive never heard of it, but maybe you mechanically enclined people know whats up.

sorry bout the long post

Reverse does not usually have a synchro in these cars. Later cars do have it, though.

Check to see if the heater fan is getting power; remove the screen cover under the hood and check for power and ground at the motor. If you do have power, then yes, likely need a new motor, and requires removal of the dash and everything to replace. PITA.

On the starter - sounds like the bendix drive isn't clean and lubricated - I'd recommend removal and cleaning/greasing.

Your hvac system doesn't give heat through the dashboard face vents. Well, actually you already knew that - what I mean is it's not designed to provide heat through them. The fan is at top of the hvac box, then below that are the duct exits for those main vents, so they only get unheated air from outside. At the bottom of the hvac box is the heater core, so only floor and windshield defrost air passes through the core to be heated. In cold temps, you just have to close the main dashboard front vents.

As the others have said the center vents are not connected to the heat. In the later cars... 1982.5 on this changed as I recall but on the early cars the center was AC only.

The heater fan. Test it as Vaughan says and then look up threads on the heater fan. There is a much more simple fix to just replace the motor. No need to pull the entire dash out... as long as you do not mind cutting some of the plastic and putting in a replacement fan from Wal-mart or such.

On the reverse issue. Easy way to solve that. When you want to go into reverse... shift the car into 2nd gear first and then go directly from 2nd through neutral into reverse. This should stop the grinding. Same thing for 1st gear. Shift 2nd and then first.

Best of luck

My son and I did the heater fan replacement with the "walmart" fan approach and had excellent results.
in our case we went to Camper World and purchased a $30 12v fan made to plug into the lighter. we tore the device apart to salvage the fan and motor. at the same time we removed the dash and tore out the original a/c unit and did some wiring repairs for the guages, lights and such. while the dash was out we pulled the entire heater box.
with the heater box out, we split and cleaned the box, renewed the flapper sealing foam (tool box liner with spray adheasive), and we modified the walmart motor to fit the original motor mounts. the modification was a simple buildup of duct tape to bring the new motor to the same approximate diameter as the original motor.
once it was all clean and bench tested we reinstalled the heater box with renewed seals.
the results were great and we have heat to the floor and to the window once the dash vents are set to the closed position.
total time on the project was approximately 3 days in after hours work.

thanks to the board for the idea and encouragement!

Nice job Bill!

Pulling the dash is not as daunting a task as you might think, IMO. Just be sure you mark your wiring as you take it apart and make notes if you need to. This really gives you a chance to clean your grounds up and other wiring issues you may have. Your car will certainly thank you for it and will give you a few years of good heat, too.

You need to upload your pics to some webspace, then either enter the link name in your post starting with "www." or if the link name ends with ".jpg" (and if your webspace provider allows direct links), you can enclose the link name with to have the picture appear in your post. If using just the link name without , whoever's reading just clicks on the linkname to have the pic appear in a seperate window. Resize pics to a reasonable size like 800x600 or smaller before uploading.
I use free space on Yahoo Photos as webspace and provide just the link name.
